Hot Take: I *like* it when people explain jokes.

Even if I understand the joke, it's soothing to know I didn't miss anything. BUT often I *did* miss something and didn't even know!

Explaining a joke does not "ruin it." I don't understand why people say that. (Although, I can see how explaining a joke, because it's just not very good is bad. If the joke isn't good ... not explaining it won’t make it any better.)

If someone asks you to explain a joke I think you should just explain it and be nice. It should be more socially acceptable to ask for a joke to be explained and people who groan and shout "now it's ruined" need to stop.

In fact, some jokes become more funny when they are carefully explained, especially if you try to be very neutral and clinical about it. "And you see, it is humorous that..." give it a try!

Neurotypical Social Skill #144

If anyone wants you to make eye contact (eye contact is the only way a nt can tell if you're listening), draw some simple eyes on sticky notes and stick them to your face. This way, the neurotypicals will be impressed by your amazing eye contact skills.

Tuafw you have to go shopping alone because none of your friends want to come with so you're already slightly uncomfortable because you're alone in public, and then you can't find some of the things you're looking for and you start feeling overwhelmed because you just want to buy your things and leave but they don't have them so you want to stim to calm down, but you can't because you don't have any of your toys or be subtle about it and it's just all-in-all a bad shopping trip. 🔐🌌

I realized that there are times where, unless its blatantly obvious, I can't detect when someone is being sarcastic, or joking. If they say something in a way that sounds like they're being serious or they mean what they say, I don't get it. I know that ADHD and autism can overlap, but how can I tell if it is one or the other? Do people with ADHD have trouble detecting things like this too?

Not a lot of research has been done into this but based off of what research is present about ADHD and social skills then this probably is something ADHD related.

Like sarcasm and joking requires a certain level of detailed understanding of social skills and that’s something a large majority of people with ADHD struggle learning during childhood. It’s hard to learn the details of social interaction because that’s all learned through observation of other people and well ADHD doesn’t like that thing. 

Some research has found that this seems to be that executive dysfunction messes with how well we use social skills.
