I always feel that the ability to hear, see, understand yourself -- ourselves -- is an expression of social consciousness. When Canadian Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin rose to give the fourth LaFontaine-Baldwin Lecture on Friday night (this year in Halifax), I couldn't help but think of this consciousness as calm self-confidence. There we were in a large hall, full of people wanting both to hear and to talk about the public good. And that is the idea of these lectures. Take the ethics and the ideas of the founders of modern Canada -- Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and Robert Baldwin, as well as Joseph Howe -- and project them through today's atmosphere of urgent immediacy in order to create a sense of direction. At a time when many find it difficult to focus on long-term reality, the Chief Justice began where ethics and philosophy must always begin -- with the fundamental question of how you might imagine "the other" in our society. If you cannot leap outside of yourself to imagine the other, well then, the other will always be negatively different -- another religion, colour or race; people whose ideas are considered wrong because they are different.
