Stole this idea from Michelle, except I'm not as fancy so I'm not going to make a downloadable playlist. But here's a list of songs that remind me of my angst-ridden high school days.
1. Hey There Delilah- Plain White Ts
I was so "in love" (as in love as a 14 year old can be) with a boy who lived 5 hours away. And I wasn't allowed to have a boyfriend. But we liked each other and would talk for hours on end on Facebook. He now has multiple piercings, all of his Facebook posts are about working out, and I'm counting the days until his girlfriend gets pregnant.
2. Curse of Curves- Cute is What We Aim For
Sitting in the Comm Arts room, I don't remember if it was grade 10 or grade 11 (it might have been both), listening to Josh's iPod and designing things. Where I realized that I enjoyed that stuff and wanted to do it with my life.
3. Baby- Justin Bieber
Brittany (what's her URL now?! I can't find her!!) "dancing" like Justin Bieber. In Science 20. And at my 17th birthday. And taking terrible photos while listening to that song. Always stands out in my mind for some reason.
4. Our Song- Taylor Swift
Of course Taylor would make this playlist. I had a huge crush on a boy in grade 9 (and rumor had it he liked me too). And we slow danced to this song (and a few others) at our grade 9 grad. And that was closest thing to "romance" to happen to me at that age.
5. Low- T-Pain
Driving through a blizzard in the mountains to get to Idaho. Phoebe and Serena playing this song on repeat, until everyone in the car new every word.
6. You Belong With Me- Taylor Swift
Grade 11. Massive crush on a boy who would ask me for advice about the girl he liked. I convinced him to ask her out. Then I got to watch them hold hands on the school bus everyday. We lived super close together, and I insisted that I WAS the girl in the music video.
7. Airplanes- B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams
A (now former, for reasons I still don't totally understand) friend and I changed lyrics to this song to be about the girl mentioned in the last song. We called her "Pluto", and talked about her in front of her face (and she never found out).
8. Party Rock Anthem- LMFAO
High school graduation. Dancing with friends at the banquet in my high heels and my floor length dress. Then, later that night/early the next morning, dancing in an outdoor tent in the rain with my new boyfriend and feeling on top of the world.
9. Talking to the Moon- Bruno Mars
Introduced to me by a boy. The boy who was my first kiss. The boy who broke things off with me because he liked my best friend. Shockingly, she's still my best friend.
10. See You Again- Miley Cyrus
EFY, the first summer. I was 14, and it was awesome. Met the first boy I "really" liked. Met Brooklyn.
11. Rolling in the Deep- Adele
Summer 2011, when Shane first got his license. Driving around in the old CR-X. This song was on the radio all the time, and he hated it. The day he got his license we went to Chinook to return something, then decided to buy swimsuits and go swimming, completely on a whim.
12. California Gurls- Katy Perry
End of grade 11/Summer 2010. Wearing crazy outfits to musical theater with Felicity. Driving around in Nikki's 1987 Toyota Corolla, my first summer working at Denny's.
13. Summer of '69- Bryan Adams
My dad taught me this song (along with several others) when I was about three. It's still our favourite song together.
14. Breathe- Taylor Swift
2 am, crying at my computer as I was breaking things off with the boy from a million miles away. Crying myself to sleep to this song on repeat. Didn't want to hurt him, but I couldn't deal with being so emotionally envolved anymore.
15. Speak Now- Taylor Swift
Obviously, Taylor Swift wrote my high school years. Whoops. Reminds me of a former friend, who wrote me out of her life in grade 12. At the time I didn't understand why and became very defensive so I didn't have to admit that my feelings were hurt. Looking back on it (and hearing things from mutual friends), there were things happening in her life that she felt I wouldn't understand (I would have, if she'd given me the chance). From what I gather, she felt like things in her life were falling apart, and that I had everything together. What she didn't realize was that I was only broadcasting the good things to the world, because I sure didn't have it all together. But we were so excited for this album to launch, and we were so excited about every single released leading up to it. And we wanted to go see her in concert together.
16. Dynamite- Taio Cruz
Summer 2010. Dancing around our dorm at EFY with Savannah, after Mary let her iPod with me. Driving down the highway with Brooklyn in the mini van just days after she got her license. The summer I was 16 was the summer I felt like I had freedom.
18. Lucky- Jason Mraz
Everytime I've traveled since Ottawa the summer I was 15 (we don't talk about that trip though, it was awful and I was a selfish brat), my Facebook status or a tweet has always been lyrics from this song the day I come home. Why? I don't know. It's just what I do.
19. Saturday- Basshunter
The now-boyfriend made me a mix CD the summer before we started dating. When he was freshly dumped, and I was his shoulder to cry on (while I was flirting with another guy). This song was on the CD and I used to always listen to it while getting ready for dances on Saturday nights.
20. For The Nights I Can't Remember- Hedley
My first slow dance ever. New Years Eve 07-08. Friend of friends. He ended up coming out a few years after that.
