Sweden's Sofia Vokalensemble takes the grand prize in the recently concluded 11th Maribor Choral Competition in Slovenia. Conductor Bengt Ollén also took home two special awards for the conductor of the (1) best performance of a composition by Jacobus Handl Gallus and (2) the best performance of the contemporary compulsory Slovenian composition. Next year, Sofia Vokalensemble will represent the competition in the 2012 European Grand Prix for Choral Music.
Here's one of my favorite performances by Sofia Vokalensemble which was performed in their Stockholm Christmas concert in 2009.
Sweden is known for producing some of the best choirs in the world. The Sofia Vokalensemble, one of Sweden's more active choirs in the international choral circuit, will compete today in the final round of the 11th Maribor International Choral Competition against choirs from the Philippines, Spain and Germany.
