Big congratulations go out to @teamhasselborg for winning the Swedish Nationals 👏 Despite only having 4 women’s teams competing this year, the competition sure was tough & Team Hasselborg were actually the ones pursuing at this event. Team Wranå beat them during the round robin & got an automatic bye to the final, whereas Team Hasselborg had to play the SF vs Team Foxglide. . . Never count out the 2018 Olympic Champs. Even w/ 2 pregnant women on the team, another one on maternity leave & lineup changes throughout this season, they know how to battle it out. The Worlds qualifier will be an interesting one for sure. There’s been a lot of talk these past few days about how 🐐 Niklas Edin finally has an Olympic gold medal, thus completing the full set - one of each color, or that Oskar Eriksson is now the most decorated Olympic curler - first to get 2 medals in one Olympics and 4 overall. What's been noticeably absent from the conversations are accolades for @agnesknochen who in earning bronze in Beijing as @teamhasselborg 's second also joins Niklas Edin in having a full set of Olympic medals. People of course remember the 2018 gold, but most forget Agnes has a silver from 2014 as alternate. Now if people are going to be dismissive & overlook that 2014 silver because she was "just an alternate" then the same treatment should apply to Oskar's 2014 bronze since he too was an alternate that year. . . Curling often touts itself for the strides it makes to advance equality, including parity in prize money between men and women, but I can't help but notice that in all the hours I spent watching curling these past 3 weeks & all the videos & articles I've seen in both English and Swedish, I don't recall seeing enough props for Agnes & her accomplishments. This is not of course a dig at Nik & Oskar - I have a long established & documented history as Team Edin's number 1 hardcore fangirl, but I'm a woman & the kind of neurodivrgent being w/ a strong sense of justice so I felt I needed to give credit where credit is due. It's so hard to be competitive in sports as a woman, especially as a mother, which is what Agnes has been doing all these years. I certainly hope Team Hasselborg not just wins Worlds gold this year, but commits to another quad. What do you do when you’ve already achieved the sport’s highest honor? You try to do it again. But it’s hard enough to get to the Olympics, much less win, and then come back & win again. I think a lot of people, myself included, were disappointed @teamhasselborg didn’t get gold again. But the Swedish women showed a remarkable example of the ability to brush off the previous loss & come out swinging. It may be a different color, but there was still an Olympic medal to be won & a tough battle ahead. Team Hasselborg showed up to the ice hungry & determined. . . My number one favorite summer Olympian is swimmer & cancer survivor Nathan Adrian. He’s often mentioned a quote that goes something like experience is what you have when you don’t get what you wanted. Given the disappointing outcomes of the 2021 Worlds & European Championships, I’m glad Team Hasselborg were able to learn & grow from the experience & were able to set aside the disappointment of the Olympic semifinal to win the bronze medal game. My absolute favorite image from that game might be the final shot where everyone & their mom (literally) was involved in making sure that lost rock got to where it needed to go to secure the win. . . When I think of Team Hasselborg, I see them as the very definition of team - they’re like sisters, like family, beyond just a group of highly talented & skilled athletes united by the quest for Olympic glory. I can’t begin to imagine the gravity of having to deal w/ Sofia testing positive for C19 right before the Olympics. The team banding together to overcome that stressful challenge & just keep chugging along is a true testament to their determination. . . We are about 7 hours away from the highly anticipated @svenskcurling match between @teamniklasedin & @teamhasselborg So happy this thing has turned into something way bigger than a friendly scrimmage on Team Hasselborg’s Youtube channel (although I still want to see something out of that in the future. Stoked that the big game will be on SVT Play. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the mixed doubles action on SVT Play this morning, and it helped me prep for tomorrow - I learned it’s best to watch on my phone even though the screen is smaller because the buffering on my laptop is just ridiculous. At one point my comp was almost an entire end behind the livestream on my phone. . . It was a neat surprise seeing 🐐 @niklasedin & @annahassel in the post-game interview earlier to promote the event. I have no idea what they said because kvinnan inte talar svenska, I’ve forgotten most of what I learned in the 200+ days of Duolingo I did between 2018 & 2019, but I appreciated the promotion efforts. Also I LOVE the @svenskcurling face masks and hoodies from the mixed doubles event and wish I could order them for myself, because you know that’s how this fangirl rolls. Too bad Dynasty Curling doesn’t make them because I’m certainly very experienced ordering Swedish gear from them. BTW props to the sponsors who made this weekend possible. Looking forward to seeing Team Hasselborg in competition mode the rest of the season, whatever the season looks like given the COVID-19 pandemic that’s still raging and already cancelled several events. Several Canadian teams are already starting to to release their official schedules for the 2020-2021 season. That’s certainly helpful to fangirls like me to plan out if and when I sleep especially for weekends like this weekend where multiple events are going on at the same time. Not bad considering we are living in COVID-19 times. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll curl again until Fall 2021 given the COVID-19 situation in my county, so I’m stuck just watching livestreams and fangirling this way. Such a shame given I have a closet full of curling clothes that all say EDIN on them from Dynasty Curling that I am yet to try out, as well as a Team Silvernagle GSOC jacket I’m excited to try once it gets cold enough to wear it.
