It had been a lazy day, neither of you bothering to check the time as you lounged together in bed, having abandoned the idea of watching a movie on the couch after a hearty lunch had made you both feel drowsy. Instead you had much preferred having quiet conversations and take catnaps throughout the rest of the day.
You weren't exactly hangover, both of you knew your limits and controlled your alcohol intake, but having been to the pub and then the club —only leaving once the bartender told you they were about to close down— for the birthday of one of your common friends really had proved how used you had become to a regular sleeping schedule.
You're not sure when you ended up laying on top of him, feeling the warm skin of Kyle's chest under your cheek, the slow raise and fall of his breathing and the even thump of his heart that perfectly matched yours. You weren't sure when you had fallen asleep or for how long, just now becoming aware of the arm looped around your shoulders and the soft drag of his other hand up and down your spine.
You don't think he could really tell you if you asked, either, because it isn't until you adjust a bit —just enough to tuck your face against the crook of his neck— that Kyle seems to notice your aware state. "Awake, angel?" the question is quiet and slow, the words barely murmured against your head before he manages to adjust himself to look down at you.
His eyes are lidded, his body as warm and pliant as yours, looking as ready to fall back asleep as you felt. Your only reply is a light hum, and he leans his head a little closer to press a kiss to your forehead before he's melting back against the pillows.
His hand keeps trailing up and down your back, tracing invisible patterns and shapes, simply enjoying that half-asleep state. "Should make something for dinner," he mumbles after a while, his touch stopping, but only so he could trace his knuckles against your cheekbone instead.
You give a light hum in response, not an agreement nor a denial, just acknowledging the suggestion as you left your eyes flutter closed, tilting your head to lean into his touch.
"…but i don't wanna move." His complaint comes before you can manage proper words and a lazy smile pulls at your lips as you finally manage to open your eyes, slowly adjusting so your chin is resting on his sternum and your eyes meet his. "We could just stay like this," you offer in a sleepy voice, one of your hands moving to trace the same patterns he had been drawing on your skin on his ribs. "Not that hungry, anyway."
Even with how tired he is, how slow his blinking is and how sluggish his movements have become, he still lets out a disapproving grunt at the idea of skipping a meal. He gives a light shake of his head, his hand moving to cup the back of your head, "now that's not right, should eat at least a few bites."
You hum lightly, your hand slowly making its way up his ribs to his chest and shoulders, raising soft goosebumps as it goes. "Alright, no empty stomachs to bed," you concede after a moment, watching as he gives an approving nod. And, as neither of you make the first move, you can't help the knowing smile that pulls at your lips. "Need to let go if i have to go to the kitchen," you point out.
He lets out a soft groan, mumbling something you can't quite hear but guess to be something along the lines of "i know, angel", his head pressing back against the pillows, the perfect picture of a martyr. A couple minutes go by and his arms have stayed in the exact same place, one around your waist, the other across your shoulders so he can cradle your head to his chest.
"Dinner in 10?" You offer finally, and you can't help the soft, sleepy laugh that leaves you as he nods almost immediately and just holds you closer.

You hear his light scoff behind you, and you focus on giving your outfit a few finishing touches before turning from the mirror to him, finding Kyle already less than a step away from you. "What's up with all that sass? On date night too?" you ask lightheartedly, wagging an accusatory finger in front of his chest.
A light laugh leaves him, and he gently moves your hand away, just to give the jumper you're wearing a light tug. "I've been looking for this, you know?" he looks at you with lightly raised eyebrows, almost anticipating what your excuse is going to be.
You look down at your outfit before looking back at him, "it's been in the closet, maybe you should've just looked better," it's all the help you offer, making him laugh again. A small smile pulls at your lips as his hand slides from the edge of the jumper to your waist, the touch warm even through the thick fabric.
"Right, the closet. Bet it wasn't my side of the closet, though, was it?" you both know the answer to the question before he makes it. But you just play along, humming as you purse your lips and squint your eyes a bit, as if having to think about it.
"Well, now that you say it, maybe it wasn't." You end up conceding, as if it were a theory that needed confirmation, rather than a known fact. You give a shrug, moving a little closer so your hands can trace up Kyle's arms, stopping on his shoulders. "Then again, why would it have to be there, you know?"
He lets out another scoff then, giving your hip a squeeze, his weakest attempt at a reprimand. "One would expect it to be given that it's my jumper, don't you think angel?"
You're the one to raise your eyebrows at that, as if his words had been utterly offensive. "Yours? I'm sorry, this is our jumper you're talking about. Or do you call our shared home yours too when I'm not around? Is this how i find out, no thoughts of building a life together at all, huh Kyle?"
He stops you dramatics with a laugh, fully pulling you in until you're chest to chest and cutting your monologue off by kissing you. "Alright, alright, just keep the stupid jumper," he murmurs with amusement when the kiss breaks, his lips brushing against yours with every word. He feels more than sees the triumphant grin that pulls at your lips at his surrender, and with an amused grumble that goes along the lines of "you're absolutely shameless, angel", he pulls you in for another kiss.

Kyle has never considered himself a believer of any sort. He didn’t grow up in a religious household, he had never developed any sort of superstition –had never assigned luck to any item or ritual, hadn’t felt like a day had been doomed because of a certain action– nor had he ever trusted the existence of some sort of ‘other’. Stuff like aliens, witchcraft, ghosts (bar the one he called lieutenant or mate) or rivalries between werewolves and vampires only taking up space in his life in the form of novels and dvd copies on his shelf.
That was until he met you.
He didn’t know how he had never met you before, apparently you were a friend of one of his closest mates back home. He had come back from a seemingly never-ending op, almost five full months of eating rations, camping out most nights and dealing with a constant of life-or-death scenarios. The captain had decided they all deserved a few weeks to wind down, that’s how he ended up back in the pub a couple streets from home, with the friends he had known since his very first school year.
It wasn’t exactly a ‘welcome home party’, he had made it clear a long time ago he didn’t need those when coming back from what was essentially his job –they never threw parties when his mate Jamie came back from a work trip that involved endless meetings, nor when Lyla finally reached the ‘perfect’ design after a client had requested at least 25 adjustments on each step of the way– but after having been reborn a few times in less than half a year, maybe it was a bit celebratory. That’s why he didn’t mind when Mark had asked if a friend could tag along.
Kyle had seen the pub’s door open, coincidentally happening right after his turn in the game of pool the group had been playing while waiting for everyone to arrive. He had leaned back against the wall, bringing his pint up to his lips while he passed his cue to Jamie. But he hadn’t taken even the smallest sip, because his brain had zeroed in on you the moment you walked in, right behind Mark. The two of you laughing at whatever story he might be telling animatedly, judging by the dramatic gestures he was making as he guided you to their table.
Kyle had never believed in any sort of ‘other’, in any creature or myth. But he felt his beliefs start to shift, because someone as beautiful as you had to be put in his life by something like fate.
Frankly, he spent all evening trying to not make a fool of himself. His eyes would constantly shift to find you, his conversations often trailing off so he could join whatever topic you were chatting about instead. Maybe it didn’t work as well as he expected, because his friends definitely noticed, and somehow he had kept finding himself being the one in closest proximity to you. You’d happen to be paired up for every pool or darts game, coincidentally being sent to get a new round of drinks at the same time and always having to share the same bench at the booth.
He had tried to play it off, ignoring the way his friends kept on giving him knowing looks and cheeky smirks. As long as you didn’t realise the way his brain seemed to take longer to buffer whenever your eyes were focused on him, he’d consider it an accomplishment.
At least the embarrassment had paid off, because when the pub started to empty out in the early hours of the AM, everyone bidding farewells and starting to go their respective ways, he had come to know that you lived by his place, just a couple streets down.
He had taken the opportunity as soon as it had presented itself, offering to be the one to walk you home, after all he was headed the same way –he ignored the voice in the back of his head that told him it was meant to be–. You two had definitely walked slower than necessary, taking double the time needed to make the way back. Kyle had tried to hide his disappointment once you’d reached your building.
However, lucky him, you had dared to be the one to speak first, mentioning something about a movie you two had talked about at some point through the night, using it as the perfect excuse to invite him up to yours. Just for a rewatch and a more proper discussion, of course.
And after that night, that had prolonged into the morning, he had felt it. The shift, that something that made him think of you more often than not. What had started as you joining their group hangouts more often had turned into constant one-on-one hangouts. And he couldn’t help but feel it, like a tether, something that linked you to him and made his chest feel heavy whenever you weren’t around.
Now that he was holding you in his arms, tangled in his sheets after another shared night, he knew. Your soft eyes and softer touch, the melody in your laugh and the ease with which you slid into place, always fitting in, no matter the setting. Kyle thought about congratulating you, the way you could make it seem so easy, how you had managed to hide it for so long.
He peppered soft kisses to your cheeks and your forehead, admiring how relaxed and welcoming you looked, even in your sleep. He had never believed in anything occult, never thought too deeply about it. But now that he knew you, had you in his life, he knew how wrong he had been all along.
He knew now, he knew you two were not the same. You had fooled everyone into thinking you were merely a human, but he knew the truth, because someone like you could be nothing but an angel.
