Sicktember Day 12—“You’re adorable when you’re sick”—Dina Woodward x fem!reader
I feel like Dina would definitely speak some Spanish (Isabela Merced is American-Peruvian and fluent in both), maybe Dina doesn’t know a ton but she would know some?
Silver Stars, Warm Heart
“Babe…baby…mi amor. Wake up.”
You’re gently tugged from your light sleep when Dina’s soft, familiar voice cuts through your dreams, pulling you back into a reality that’s even better than anything you could dream up.
A soft smile curls on your lips before you even open your eyes as you lean instinctively closer into the warmth of her hand on your cheek. You breathe in her scent as she brushes a curl from your face, it’s a warm mix of citrus and cedar, summer air and something else just so Dina.
She must have just returned from patrol. You’d wanted to stay up, to wait for her, but you guess you fell asleep at some point.
“Sorry to wake you. You looked so peaceful. Pero, mi amor, the stars. You’ll love them. Come see with me.” Her voice is low and soft yet you can hear the excitement in her tone and when your eyes finally flutter open, her warm gaze almost blinds you in the best sort of way.
“The stars?” You echo, your own voice soft and a little thick from sleep as you shift on the couch, sitting up, the knit blanket falling from your shoulders.
“Sí. Las estrellas,” Dina hums, taking your hand in her’s and gently coaxing you to stand. She bends slightly to grab the fallen blanket, wrapping it back around your body like a cape. You can’t help but notice her normally raspy voice has taken on a slightly deeper strain to it, but you let your lips tug into an even softer smile when she lifts her own hat from her head and places it on yours, leaving her dark strands adorably messy.
“Ven, amor. I’ll keep you warm.” Her arm slips around your waist as she tugs you close against her and the two of you make your way out the back door. With the little light pollution in Jackson Hole, you don’t need to walk far to find a small dark clearing surrounded by trees that’s still inside the gates, nice and safe.
Dina’s gun is in her leg holster, just in case, still there from patrol earlier. With a small flashlight, she leads you through the trees and into the clearing you both know so well. You follow her easily and in minutes the two of you are plopping down on a thin blanket that she must have grabbed without you noticing, and you chuckle as she lays it out with an exaggerated flourish.
The moment you sit down, she joins you, settling in close and immediately pulling you into her so your back rests against her chest and she wraps her arms around you, tucking the blanket even tighter around your shoulders.
A soft kiss is pressed to the back of your neck with a soft hum before she tilts her head up and you do the same.
The sight nearly knocks the breath out of you. The world feels as though it shrunk to just the two of you sitting there among the trees yet expanded infinitely as you take in the twinkling night sky. It looks almost unreal, the millions of tiny lights painting the sky like cosmic brushstrokes. You’ve seen some stunning nights before, but this is just….wow. Your breath catches in wonder and all you can do is breathe out, barely above a whisper, “oh.”
“So beautiful…like you.” Dina murmurs in your hear, resting her chin to your shoulder for a moment before leaning back to look up again.
You feel warmth in your cheeks at her words and your heart thumps steadily in your chest, full and light. You lean your weight into her just a bit more.
A few minutes pass in perfect bliss, the only sounds are your girlfriend’s soft breathing behind you and the gentle chirp of crickets hidden in the surrounding field.
Then Dina shifts ever so slightly behind you, a soft sniffle sounds through the quiet night. You feel it before you hear it, her chest hitching against your back, her breath hot on your neck. She doesn’t have time to pull away, her arms only squeeze you tighter with the force of them.
“Hhii’shhhhiew! Hhehh-hnungh’cshhhuu! ‘tttShhuuhhh!” She sneezes three times, muffling the strong fit against your shoulder.
She sniffles with a soft groan, “lo siento, bebé.” Her voice is now thick with enough congestion to worry you.
“You’re okay, love. Bless you.” You twist in her arms so you can look at her under the light of the stars. Even in the darkness of the night you can just make out a deep flush to her cheeks, and not the good kind.
“Dee,” you hum, concern etching into your face. “You’re getting sick, hmm?” Your hand slides out from under your blanket cocoon, reaching to press against her forehead. Too warm, your heart sinks.
Dina gives you the most pitiful pout you’ve ever seen before she buries her face in your neck with another sniffle. “Mmph…no?” She tries, whining a little.
“Baby, you literally just sneezed on me. You’re definitely coming down with something.” You can’t help but offer her a sympathetic chuckle, wrapping you own arms around her this time.
She pulls away from your neck so she can look you in the eyes, her dark hazelnut gaze inky black and reflecting the stars above. “Maybe.” She admits with a small sheepish smile.
Leaning forward, you press a light kiss to the tip of her pink nose, then one to her forehead, a silent promise you’ll take care of her, but a frown crosses your face when you feel her shiver in your arms. And judging by the heat you just felt on her skin, she definitely needs to be in bed.
“Mmm, let’s get you inside, baby. Warm you up?” You’re already slipping out of the blanket and mirroring her action from earlier, tucking it around her shoulders this time. She takes one last look up at the sky but your eyes stayed glued on her. Even the stars can’t outshine the smile she gives you when she looks back at you. With a simple nod she stands up with you, allowing you to guide her back towards the path home.
Dina leans heavily into you as you walk back, the long patrol from the day and her now developing cold catching up to her. She sniffles every few seconds and each time you just kiss her hair and hold her closer as you walk. As you near your house, she hums softly, “sorry I ruined stargazing.” Your heart cracks a little at how small she sounds, as if she could ever ruin anything.
“Oh amor…” you pause a moment, using a gentle finger to tilt her chin up to look at you. “…you didn’t ruin anything. You just…added your own little flair to the night.” You chuckle softly and she blushes, half chuckling, half coughing along with you.
“That’s one way to put it.”
You tug her flush against your chest. “But I’m serious, baby. Tonight is perfect, sneezes and all. Also…hate to break it to you but you’re kinda totally adorable when you’re sick.” You smile wide, a warm feeling in your chest because she smiles too.
“Oh so you’re saying I’m not normally adorable?” She muses with some of her normal Dina humor that makes you laugh out loud.
“You’re kidding right?” You roll your eyes playfully at her and start peppering kisses all across her face, the last one lingering a moment on her lips. Germs be damned. “You’re adorable all the time, Woodward, pretty sure you don’t know how not to be.”
She’s grinning, carefree and happy despite her cold when you pull back to look at her and tuck her back against the your side, “now c’mon. Let’s get inside. I’ll make you some tea, we’ll get you all cozy and we can sleep for a week. I’ll hold you through everything, sneezes, germs and all.”
“Mmm…eres perfecta.” Dina hums against your chest as you keep walking. “Te amo.”
“I love you too, baby. Te amo so much.” You smile into her hair with a gentle kiss. Your night of stargazing may have taken a turn, but you don’t care one bit, because your whole universe is right here in your arms and you wouldn’t trade her for all the stars in the sky.
