Yeah so I realised that I havent posted anything in a long while so heres a review I guess
Soft Idiot - Younger Moments
Soft idiot is an obscure indie folk project from Philadephia that I've been following for a few years now. Their music has been especially important to me, and it lives rent free in my head. Their seventh full-length album, Younger Moments, is a little less exploratory and bold than projects like In the Long Light of the Failing Sun, but absolutely still carries the same heart and soul. A solid, consistent base of electric and acoustic guitars is supported by an assortment of piano, banjo, and accordion, as well as Justin Roth's absolutely gorgeous voice.
The sunset-colored, Autumn-shaped sound evokes a 45 degree evening. Well layered tracks and harmonies envelop the listener in a way that is sort of uncommon for folk, and that I absolutely love. Judicious and memorable melodies play beautifully with melancholy lyrics that pierce the soul.
To some degree, the slightly lower concept of Younger Moments compared to some of their other work helps accentuate the general vibe and sound that Soft Idiot carries. It's that fuzzy warmth that really defines the band for me, a filled-out and relaxed sound that threatens to wrap you up with a blanket and watch the stars together.
I recall playing this record for my father near the end of my last year at college. He remarked that it "sounded generic", or something along those lines, and I'm not really sure what else I expected. Despite his remarkably clever nature, his taste in music doesn't make much sense to me beyond the occasional pick.
His opinion doesn't mean much to me, of course. Younger Moments remains wonderful on each and every listen, finding its way deeper and deeper into my heart. Whether it's that thick, luscious riff at the end of I Want Everything, or the backing vocals on Neon Bells, I just can't get enough.
Justin, if you're somehow reading this, I seriously love your stuff. It's meant so much to me ever since I first found Rain Wins Another Year! in my freshman year of college. Please don't scare me again like you did when you said this was going to be your last record. I can only wish for you to keep making music as long as you care to.
