‘ — so,   there i am, stake in hand — POISED TO KILL!   ’     theatrics in her voice,  purpose made dramatic.   it isn’t actually something she wants to delve into (it’s been a weird week,  her hands still shaking a little when she thinks about seeing him),  fabricating an awkward layer to it.   ‘   stake ’em & bake ’em!   just a couple vamps,  current status:  pile o’ dust.   seriously,  i know sunnydale is like,  evil or whatever but you would think after a certain point they would realize to just..  stop coming here?   imagine thinking after all this,  it’s still a good idea to show your face in sunnydale when we’re around.   ’

     ..   well,  now that you’re back which is absolutely narsassistic & wrong to think about your friends but you’re  the  fucking  slayer  and they’re .. not.   also seriously,  stop thinking about the fact you abandoned them and they needed you.   (it’s eating away at you & no matter how many things you all repeat the i’m sorry for leaving and we forgive you, buff  —  you still feel bad.   maybe there is no feeling better).      ‘   speaking of,  are we expecting some big ol’ big bad this year or can we graduate in peace?   i know the cosmic forces of the universe hate us & whatever,  but i would kill for a week of peace.   literally.   like what bastards do i gotta kill for my week of peace?   r&r much,  right?   i think we deserve it.   maybe we can all go to like.. the bahamas or something after we graduate.   assuming we survive and the school doesn’t like.. blow up or get sucked into the hellmouth or something equally as awful.  ’

does he really care?   well,  that’s not worth going into.   the slaying of demons has become such a monotonous commonplace,  still some excitement in the moment but looking back seems to be just another day in life on the hellmouth.   still,  he’d been hoping for something a little more interesting.   something that’d distract from the MAJOR ICK FACTOR of everything lately.   seeing all the adults around him acting just like him wasn’t exactly a confidence booster,  had just led him to question how childish he really is.   but oh,  that’s a question he doesn’t want an answer to.   it’s better not to know!   better to live in a blissful ignorance!

‘   can’t graduating be big bad enough?   ’     it’d be a struggle to get through the year,  to get the grades he needed to pass.   it’s not as if he isn’t trying,  he’s doing his best!   but when your downtime is spent fighting the forces of evil of course homework would slip through the cracks.   and who has the time to learn algebra anyway?   if they knew just how many apocalypses he’d helped to stop they’d totally give him a free pass,  but no they have to keep this stuff secret.      ‘   does that we include giles?   ‘cause i don’t think his tweed is gonna hold up in that heat and i don’t think i could survive seeing giles in swim trunks.   ’     there’s an ease to settling in to the way things always were,  even if there’s the slight tension of an unspoken difference.   he’s not going to ask how she is  -  he knows the answer  -  so instead all he can do is make jokes and hope it makes the situation better.   the same thing he always does.

the last few days     [ weeks,   months,   YEARS ]       have been rough,   to say the least.     high school,     as a rule,   is one of the worst things on the planet - especially for people like xander who,   against his own will,   has been branded as a loser.     he’ll insist that’s entirely to do with one cordelia chase,   will refuse to admit that perhaps he’s perceived as a loser because he generally acts loser-like.     distractions from his own life     [ the horrors at school,   the far worse horrors at home ]      are always welcome,   finding himself entirely wrapped up in the mystical and frightening to avoid confronting the far too harsh reality that the real danger in his life is omnipresent and entirely human.     the desire to remain far from his home is strong,   the thought of moving out as soon as he graduates a welcome fantasy.     ‘   in any other room that’d be a frightening declaration,   but here?     a welcome distraction.   ’     so maybe he’s a little too into hearing about buffy’s pursuits in killing demons,   but in his defense they are demons,   wanting them dead isn’t exactly a nuanced opinion.     at least,   it’s not for him.     ever since jesse’s death his opinions can be summed up as:     DEMONS = BAD.     ‘   gimme a tell all on the killing,   buff.     i’m talking full play-by-play;     exposition,   climax,   resolution.     gimme the whole nine yards.   ’

A lot of the nice selfless Xander moments go unnoticed. Poor guy. Maybe because they’re not as flashy as throwing oneself down a long tower through a portal of hell or being tortured by a god to keep a secret. 

Though even big flashy moments like Xander going to Angel’s place and demanding he’d take him to the Master to save Buffy and ending up saving her aren’t noticed either. 

Instead, you have Buffy saying it’s “typical” of Xander to get in trouble and Willow not being able to remember one incident where Xander saved their lives, not to mention The Zeppo. On fandom level, Prophecy Girl is remembered for being the episode where Xander took Buffy’s rejection like a fuckboy and NOT for saving Buffy’s life.

Will I ever stop being annoyed that this scene made “romantic” love the driving motivation behind Xander’s actions here rather than just letting it be platonic?

The answer is no, no I will not.

Seriously, imagine how much more poignant this would have been if they hadn’t made Xander have a big ol’ crush on Buffy. How much more authentic it would be if he went to confront Angel at cross-point and forced him to take him down to what might be certain death, not because he’s got it bad for Buffy but because he just REFUSES to let another friend die down there.

It would have been so much more moving and so much more CHILLING if Xander went to face not only Angel, who he doesn’t trust, but then went barreling down to where he knows the Master is because he just says, “No. Not again.”

And it would have been the perfect closure. Because this time, Xander isn’t too late. This time, he can do something. This time, when he goes down into those sewers, risking life and limb, he doesn’t come away with the knowledge that he let his friend down.

He saves Buffy like he wasn’t able to save Jesse. He saves Buffy and then she goes on to kill the vampire that had a huge part in his death and it’s like permission to move on and believe that his best friend is in a better place now and that he’s not totally useless. That sometimes the good guys will win and that’s what’s worth holding out for.

I just really want a Xander whose interest isn’t just in, “Maybe one day Buffy will date me” and is in, “I love my friends and I’ll storm the gates of hell for them.”
