❛ i don’t make good company. ❜ more a hint than a statement. with blade laying across his lap and body reclined against stone, he seemed more than content to wait out the night without the warmth of bed or hearth. the dirty and dust were annoying, yes, but that couldn’t be helped.

Shaking fingers curled into his jacket. They seemed to be having this conversation often. What she couldn’t tell him. Rather, what she wouldn’t tell him. Maki had called him unfair before. And that seemed to only be more relevant now. How many times had he asked her to feel? To believe? To see the girl, hiding away? She supposed he hadn’t asked for this, for her to feel this.
She clung tightly to his jacket. For once, she didn’t want him to move out of reach. She was always afraid he was going to go somewhere she couldn’t follow. He was always somewhere ahead of her. His head was up in the stars. Truly befitting of the astronaut. Right now? Maki needed him to be on earth. She needed him to not get caught up in his confidence. She needed him to understand the things she couldn’t say.
When Kaito turned to face her, she closed the distant between her. Her eyes were wide, vulnerable. She looked everything of the terrified little girl she didn’t want to be. The girl she insisted was dead and gone. For once, she was completely and utterly herself.
She considered saying something, but words died on her lips. She just stood there, as if frozen. But then, she moved. She kissed him timidly, hesitantly, fearfully. It was, she thought, the warmest moment of her life. Over all too soon, too fast. She wished it had been longer. She wanted it to be longer. But whatever courage she had conjured up was fleeting. Leaving her, to shrink back defenselessly.
