Where The Wild Ladies Are by Aoko Matsuda is a quirky collection of interwoven short stories tinged with a modern spin on traditional ghost stories. Often I'd start a story and be confused or even a little bored but as I read on I always got swept into the story & characters. There is something about her writing that is quiet and unassuming, while being alluring in some intangible way. Some of the stories aren't even real full stories. So, according to my calculations, I’ve gotten a little more than nine hours of reading in and finished two books. Considering the amount of distraction in my day, that’s probably pretty good. . I knew I wanted to start with The Sin of White Supremacy because I’d kept putting off when grabbing a book on my way out the door, because I knew I’d want to take notes and that would be easier reading at home. Once I finished it, the gonzo Muslim punk world of Taqwacores seemed like the obvious next read, and it did neatly complement themes of ritual intimacy and examining toxic legacies of religion and finding new ways to live in faith. Also I am kind of in love with Rabeya and she is my new favorite fictional character. . . Labor organizer. Margaret Sanger — best known as a pioneer of birth control — was revolutionary in more ways than one, whose name is not unmarried by controversy from both the right and the left. In Sabrina Jones’s graphic biography, the author illustrates an incredible life (1879–1966), framing this sequential portrait with her own personal experiences of coming of age at the height of the sexual revolution. During her lifetime, Sanger transformed herself from a working-class nurse to an exuberant free-lover and savvy manipulator of the media, the law, and wealthy supporters. Through direct action, propaganda, exile, and imprisonment, she ultimately succeeded in bringing legal access to birth control to women of all classes. Sanger’s revolutionary actions established organizations that eventually evolved into Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Sabrina Jones’s autobiographical sections of the book show her journey into activist art in response to the anti-feminist backlash of the Reagan era.
