Apple Watch unbricking, finally
Apple stores may soon get a new in-store tool that can restore software on Apple Watches that end up bricked or stuck in boot loops. Right now, serious software failures usually mean the watch has to be sent off to a service center, because there is no normal wired access for users or most repair locations.
The report says Apple is preparing a “Repair Dock” that connects to a Mac and lets store staff handle software restores directly. That would be a big change for people dealing with failed updates or other glitches that leave the watch unusable.
Apple already allows some wireless recovery through an iPhone on newer software versions, but that only works when the watch can still reach a certain recovery prompt. In worse cases, that option does not help, which is why this new hardware matters. It is still unclear when stores and authorized repair partners will actually receive it.
Observation: This feels like one of those fixes that should have existed ages ago, especially for a device that is otherwise so locked down. Same-day recovery would be a lot less annoying than the current “send it away and hope” routine.
