Just some quick updates on three of the bigger (non-Medicaid, non-budget) issues still unfinished as we head towards a Saturday legislative adjournment.
Mental Health
House and Senate negotiators are”close” on a suite of bills that would address various chinks in the state’s mental health system.
The number of hours authorities should be able to hold someone believed to be a danger to themself or others remains an issue, but “there aren’t any” real sticking points and the two sides are just working through a number of details, according to Del. Ben Cline, R-Amherst and a House negotiator.
Sen. Creigh Deeds, who sponsored the Senate reform package on this, agreed.
"We’re close and we’re still talking," said Deeds, D-Charlottesville.
Ethics
These are fairly detailed bills bills, and there are still small differences between the House and Senate versions, according to Del. Todd Gilbert, who has been working on this for the House.
"Just details," said Gilbert, R-Woodstock.
It will probably be Saturday before everything’s ironed out and the House and Senate can take final votes, Gilbert said.
