You know . . . ? Timothy can’t remember the last time he felt this at ease. Maybe, like . . . twenty-ish years ago? Give or take? Somewhere before all the doppelganger business—and then some, considering the weight of debt and his desperation that eventually led him to . . . Yeah, so, tale as old as time. The thing is, he’d spent so much of his life now as a bundled cluster of nerves that actually having a moment like this almost seemed . . . wrong. Like he was forgetting something. Like his entire body was forgetting to be anxious, some muffled part like, “Hey, buddy! Be alert! Something’s gonna screw you over any minute now—”
But nothing did. Nothing . . . would. Which was an uncharacteristically optimistic way of thinking for ol’ Timmy, but honestly—? Yeah, kiddos; we’re gonna say it again. One more time, everyone:
It was nice.
And for the first time in all those agonizing years, Timothy wasn’t about to let any of those nerves ruin this for him. Or, more importantly, for Micah.
He feels his lips twitching into a smile at Micah’s delighted giggle, peers over curiously when they pull a blanket from their bag. “Aww; that’s cute,” he compliments, and his free hand moves to assist in draping the patterned keepsake across both of them. At the mention of their adoptive parents, Timothy’s mind is already starting to wander—because, like . . . there it is; there’s the thing he’s forgetting— And almost as if they can read his thoughts (he really hopes not), they pose a . . . fair but difficult question. Tim feels a tug in his gut, but he expels the tension on a quick exhale before it can knot.
“Uhh . . . No, I— I guess I don’t . . . really—?” His fingers trace one of the clouds now perfectly nestled in his lap. “Can’t actually remember much about my childhood.” Probably a good thing. Right? Man, where even was his mom anymore? (If she’s even still alive.) “That’s okay.” A lame shrug. Well . . . half of a lame shrug to not disturb the head on his shoulder. “You, uhh . . . You must really like all this space stuff, huh?”
