i’m not gonna lie like 85% of my current writing is MASSIVELY inspired by joan tierney’s ( @/filmnoirsbian ) writing. it’s gorgeous. it’s so good. everything she writes is just. wow. wow! her style and subject matter never fail to SLAP. just reading pieces by her makes me want to write, and her style is something that--while not exactly something i want to emulate (bc everyone’s style is unique and i don’t think it suits me to write it) but it’s ... very close. maggie stiefvater, tamsyn muir, terry pratchett (thud! and reaper man), patricia a mckillip (specifically her riddlemaster trilogy), and sam sykes are also Up There though, mostly in terms of style and inspiration!

THE QUIET ⤐ Nix Byrne’s world is small. It is her planter box in the spring, when green shoots begin to show above black dirt; it is the rows and rows of old, faded sketchbooks lined up on the shelf by her bed; it is the pair of pointe shoes that don’t fit her anymore but used to belong to her older sister. She hasn’t seen or talked to Ruarc Wilson in almost five years, but here he is--windswept, exhausted, desperate. Kids with alien blood--like Nix, like Ruarc--are disappearing all across America. Is anything a choice if you already know the answer?

DEMON CITY ⤐ Ira Neda Roshani--the ex-vigilante known as SKYSTEEL--only wants to avenge her dead brother. Despite her best efforts, she’s pulled deeper and deeper into the mystery of the countless missing across Anehaven. Book one of APOTHEOSIS.

DEMON EYES ⤐ The world is ending. Fortunately, Skysteel is a problem solver. Unfortunately, four other people--the vigilantes SOLSTICE, EQUINOX, HUSH, and POLTERGEIST--think the same exact thing. A group of pissy, formerly-retired superheroes have to learn to work together before the veil between dimensions disappears entirely. Book two of APOTHEOSIS.

DEMON SPITE  ⤐ Skysteel has been described as many things, most of them uncomplimentary. When her bloody past is revealed to her friends and allies and her twin brother’s murderers start hunting her, she’s left with two options: fight or run. Book three of APOTHEOSIS. 

UNDER GODLESS EYES ⤐ Orrick Graves is a part-time necromancer working for the city. Normally it would be a cushy job, nothing too complicated, nothing too hard. Normally, though, there isn’t a serial arsonist dead set on turning the city to ash and embers.

SAINT ⤐ Neasa needs to stop a war. Step 1: travel to the enemy country. Step 2: try not to kill the enemy country’s General and High Councilor. Step 3: apologize for breaking his nose. In her defense, he’s got a very punch-able face. On the other side of the continent, Fell wakes with no memories of her past. All she knows is that she used to heal--and with a war looming on the horizon, Fell has to choose between recovering her memories or making new ones.

-rubs hands like fly- half-assed demon city update but i FINALLY figured out a subplot other than Uncle Davy is an Asshole and Skysteel is Plotting Poltergeist’s Imminent Murder and it’s Ira Adopts (More) Children AND figured out a more organic way to bring the Murder Children together ... i truly am a genius of unparalleled intellect ...

quick update bc i will take any and all excuses to talk abt the Murder Children - ira neda (mc of demon city + demon eyes and the following five unplanned, untitled books) has a day job as a figure skating coach. it’s actually a cover for her training MORE vigilantes (it’s a cultural thing, don’t worry) and i’ve had the Murder Children for YEARS now but never really figured out how they all came to be under ira’s wing other than a vague “she finds them and / or vice versa.” i might sometime do proper Aesthetic character intros for all seven of them BUT we have eden (resident asshole, egyptian), nick (man possessed, puerto rican), ian (too many knives, east european type white), katie (IHOP expert, mizrachi jewish), ashley (illegally blonde, Very white), noel / hax ((control) freak seven days a week, blasian korean), esther (board-certified manslaughterer, nahuatl + colombian). they’re all varying mixes of alien + human but i think it’s very important that i let u all know that they exist.

GREEN :  “I was faking it,” Skysteel agreed. It was popular opinion that no one could get the drop on Shadow; no one was fast enough, smart enough, skilled enough, take your pick. He was invincible, an urban legend that preyed on fear and confusion. No one, that was, until she got here. “I eat my greens.”

“If you ate your greens, you wouldn’t be so short,” Poltergeist retorted, taking a step forward to balance on the lip of the roof. 

SILVER :  Anehaven was weird. Beautiful, but weird. Ira would blink, and the glittering skyscrapers would be replaced by twisting spires of rock and metal, and then by towering trees an iridescent shade of blue-and-silver, and then by a grass plain scoured flat by a relentless wind. Memory was  a funny thing. 

BROWN :  Bane could hear the coughing growl of Haunt’s ugly Volvo in the far distance. ETA five to six minutes, maybe. It only gave Bane more time here, now. She crouched in front of Dad’s gravestone, flicking a piece of moss off the corner. Any vegetation that had tried to creep up onto the stone had been turned brown and crumbling in the latest heat wave. Bane missed the sound of the rain on the rooftops and pavement of the city, but then again, it was New York. It would rain again sooner or later.

areas of worldbuilding interest - i really like looking at and building different cultures and ethnicities within worlds and how they view and interact with each other!

areas of worldbuilding disinterest - i’m ngl i. really really hate having to come up with plants. i just. like i know there need to be Different Kinds but like ... fuck, man, i just want to say ‘ok blue trees here’ and then be done with it, you know?

a bit about your wip(s) - my previous previous wip was Saint, which was a high fantasy um. ensemble-ish book (one of three). previous wip is Demon Eyes (two of seven), which is REALLY ensemble urban fantasy / superhero genre. team of superheroes come together to stop rifts in space / reality from opening and vicious bird-things invading and devouring the inhabitants of earth wholesale. as u do. current wip (there’s a wip intro coming soon i swear) is Demon City (one of seven), which follows a retired-ish vigilante trying to get back into the swing of things and. somewhat failing in spectacular ways

inspirations - in other lands by sarah rees brennan, the locked tomb trilogy by tamsyn muir, older dc comics (early 2000s, late nineties?), vertigo and wildstorm comics, everything by maggie stiefvater but specifically the raven cycle and the dreamer trilogy, black pistol fire for saint and dbmk for demon eyes and mansionair for demon city!

fun facts!

- i write a lot of superheroes. like a LOT

- i also do a lot of slipstream and cyber- and biopunk. i’m not the biggest hard sci-fi person but i end up writing a lot of it because i’m a big fan of Space and Alien characters

- a lot of my worldbuilding / a good amount of my fantasy race are based on fey + faerie myths

- so many found family themes

- i write pretty much exclusively LGBT+ characters lol

rules: look back on your work, both past and present, finished and unfinished. what are five to ten narrative elements or tropes that continuously pop up in your work? tag as many people as the number of tropes you listed.

1. found family - literally ALL THE TIME. every book i read

2. dead / absent parents - whoops lol. i guess i’m not a fan of biological family ??

3. ensemble casts - i just. related 2 found family but i just. it comes up SO often. VIGIL, Oddities, Neasa’s warband, Ira Neda’s cadre, Ira Neda’s mentees (there’s like six or seven last i checked??) but there’s just something about Groups and Camaraderie ...

4. teens are forever - relationships established as teens continue relatively unchanged into adulthood. i’ve actually been working this one so it doesn’t pop up AS often but. i have a lot of. lifelong friendship going around. u know how it is

5. enemies to lovers / enemies to friends - my favorite fucking relationship dynamic. ira and alan. neasa and liam. alan and noah.
