“It’s good to see you,” he whispers, linking his arm with hers, knowingly pulling her a little closer to him. “When was the last time you were here? My coronation? Saints, it’s been a minute, hasn’t it?” Nikolai’s eyes dart around the room as he tries to pick out anyone else who would be equally as excited to see Alina. “Oh, I should show you my new portrait. No, you deserve a full tour!”

It wasn’t easy to sneak into the Little Palace. There were guards and Grisha at every corner, and despite the knowledge that General Kirigan was meeting with his father at the palace right now, he couldn’t shake off the feeling of the man’s heavy gaze. It was everywhere here, watching, judging, warning. It wasn’t quite right to say Nikolai ignored it all — he took careful note of every feeling and worry, but he pushed forward until he was in the sun summoner’s bedroom. It was surprisingly normal. The room identical to the other Grisha; but she wasn’t like anyone else. Her powers were the key to the liberation of their kingdom, a way to destroy the fold, to reunite the two sides of Ravka. And of course, as of yesterday, she was the future princess of Ravka.

They made quite a pair. The promised saviour and the golden prince (bastard). 

When he was finally satisfied that the room was empty, and there would be no witnesses to their first meeting, Nikolai sat down on the bed, stretching and adjusting his body until he was the very picture of nonchalance. 

Now... where was she?

   A yawn as he knitted his fingers loosely together, legs stretching out along the dusty, dirty concrete floor. He’d found a remarkably clean corner and claimed it rather swiftly, and now his back was getting stiff from sitting on the wooden bench with his back against metal rods. Holding cell. He’d seen the inside of one a couple times before -- much to the endless teasing of the rest of his pack. But better him than someone else. 

   And speaking of ... The door shuddered open and three more captives were ushered in, cuffs removed and released in the cage. He sighed a looked up, recognizing one with only faint familiarity. “Welcome to the party.”

Awkward introductions shouldn’t bother him. Nina almost killed him, Matthias almost let Kaz die. The rest of the crows appeared in his life on a literal tank in below freezing weather. He woke up to  Zoya’s face  after dancing a bit too intimately with death.

But━━ what prepared you to meet someone revered as a  saint,  when you were nothing but hopes  &  dreams? A  secret,  whose only saving grace was the luck of someone else’s arrogance?

A surprisingly small knock comes in the doorway of the Little Palace’s open library. Accompanied by the nervous shift of feet of a boy  trying  to seem put together.  ( If even just a little bit. )
