Every time he read the letter again, John laughed as hard as he did the first time. Imagine, him fighting a dog for a place in the bed! And how thrilled Catherine was about the marriage, even given the circumstances. He could hardly have asked for a more devoted bride. That was a comfort that meant the world to him, given the hardships he now faced.
I’m sorry that there had been such a delay in responding to you. We arrive at our camp almost two weeks ago, but things have been hectic and we’ve nearly had a couple close calls. But don’t worry. We’ve yet to see any real fighting.
I’m glad that you found a companion to your liking. I hope that he will keep you safe and offer you some relief and joy when things seem lonesome.
And don’t worry. There’s no possibility of me dialing anything that you love. I’m sure Heathcliff and I will become close friends once all this is over.
It isn’t selfish, darling. No one would want to be parted from the one they live more than life. Even as I wanted to do my part, I didn’t want to leave you. I believe that just makes us human.
He had to believe that. There wasn’t any other way that he could live with himself for playing with his life when he had a wife back home who needed him. The decision, and his death, wouldn’t just impact him anymore. It would Catherine too.
I know he’d love to. Laurie and his grandfather both love to share their flowers, and they’d be especially glad to share them with a pretty young woman like yourself. They have a wide variety of things to choose from in their greenhouse, and if they don’t have what you desire, I have every confidence that they’ll help you to get it.
All I ask is for you to put in a Lily of the Valley or two. That way, when you look at them, you might think of me and we can be a little closer. You know they’re my favorite, and I think they would flourish under your care.
It seemed to John that his wife was wiser in that one line than most. No man is made for war. How true those words were! Even those who seemed eager for it eventually changed their minds. War was, perhaps, one of mankind’s greatest evils. But it didn’t seem like they were capable of living without it.
I could never think any ill of you, my love. In fact, I think the world needs more people of that same mindset. Maybe then, the world could be a little better. And no one would have to know the fear of losing a brother, husband, or son far from home. Nor the grief of having to leave behind the ones that mean the most.
I’m afraid I must leave you again, Catherine. I’m to sit on guard duty until midnight. Please don’t fret too much. I’ll rest much easier knowing that you aren’t troubling yourself unnecessarily. I love you. Please take care of yourself. I should like to come home to the same wonderful, vibrant spirit that I left.
All my love and Yours always,
Usually steady handwriting comes out wobbly, the letter creased from her many trips back and from the post office, demanding the letter back, just to return a few minutes later regretting her decision.
You must be very busy, as I don’t think I’ve ever gone this long without a letter. This is not a reproach, please don’t feel guilty, I am simply... worried for you. Every day I fear someone will come to the door with bad news, and I tried to delay sending this letter, pretending everything was fine, but I think I’d like to pretend for a moment that everything is fine, that you have just left to visit an old friend and I’m waiting for you to come back.
There shall be no bad news on this letter, only pleasant things.
The Lily of the Valley’s I bought have started to grow, just yesterday day I saw them peaking out the soil, they will be blooming in no time. As long as I keep Heathcliff away from them! You should see him, he is in this stage where he has all this energy and is constantly running around the house, and when I let him out, he rushes through the garden with no pity or love for my tomatoes!
Last Wednesday I spent all day cleaning out his tiny red footprints from the rug and the floor, it was quite a scene! I tried to be angry and firm with him, as Laurie suggested... I just don’t have it in me, my love. One flash of his eyes and I forgive him for all his crimes! It is quite a scene. I am too softhearted, I fear.
The other flowers I was able to transplant, and I already have several I can cut to put in vases. The house is looking a lot more cheerful, I enjoy seeing life everywhere I turn, it gives me quite a thrill.
Despite her initial words, she can’t keep the good mood going for long, and the letter dissolves into a fearful note, her true feelings slipping through.
When will you return, I fear I have forgotten your face. Your eyes, their exact color has eluded me. I need to see you.
