Reasons I am laying in bed staring at the ceiling tonight:

Bren Aldrich Ermendrud was 16 or 17 when he was supposed to graduate. A child. A child who grew up being groomed, even with his parents to love the empire over everything. He was a military kid, he was brilliant, he was pushed. There is no passion on earth as bright of that as a teenager child who has never questioned his beliefs. He would have done anything to succeed. His self punishment and self loathing probably started in school, and I would bet anything that Astrid was some degree of manipulative to him, intentionally or not. And the worst bit is? It was all genuine. He put his heart and soul into Trent's games and likely Astrid and to some degree Eodwulf. He wanted more than anything to believe and be part of that thing so much bigger than himself and do good. He was a child. And they made him into a murderer. And somehow he survived, and has to pick up all the pieces and hates himself all the more because he knows how he felt, even when everyone tries to absolve him. It is the shittiest place to be in but gods above watching him heal slowly is cathartic.
