     the assumption that elidibus could , indeed , read sarcasm would leave anyone surprised , for he could not — not as good as he liked to admit , at least . the trick was the tone of one’s voice , but the truth was that he couldn’t decipher it either .   so , when emet-selch forgave him , the youth could only ponder in confusion .
