the line "it's 2021 and I'm almost famous". is quite literally Brendons attempt to get himself remembered as a local god. it allows the song to be carbon dated to 2021 and assumes that people will remember him for becoming more famous after a big breakthrough. but! it also allows for memory, like "I knew him since 2021, when he wasn't famous"
all that to say, the people that said that Brendon is the local god aren't... wrong? but there's definitely Ryan Ross in the story. it almost sounds 1D style, like they were going to get back together with the promise of becoming even more, but Ryan doesn't want that
sorry this is like all over the place but I mean like. the line admits that this is Panic!'s last hurrah, because they did all this to end up almost famous, but apart. togetherness is what Ryan wants/wanted, while Brendon wants/wanted fame. together they would have both, but Ryan doesn't want that. it's 2021 and he's close enough to being famous that it's too late, but not near enough to achieve it. so instead they're both going off to greener pastures
I'm just hoping this is the last hurrah. Also it really makes me think that Brendon is trying to rewrite history as 2021 as time where panic! was obscure, effectively erasing Pretty. Odd. And afycso. And all the shit he pulled too.
