No but imagine.

Ancient Arlathan. Wind howls through Mythal's military camp. The day's battles were reasonably successful. They killed a great many of the Titan parasites that the lower ranks have begun calling durgen'len, and they discovered the entrance to a cave leading to a large vein of the blue-glowing stone - isana.

Solas sits in his tent. Today, he didn't lose anyone under his command. He should be celebrating with the other generals. Or with Mythal. She explicitly asked for his company and he knows she will be offended if he does not get himself cleaned up to leave soon.

Instead, he sits. And he stares. Tears running down his cheeks. He doesn't understand why, and he can't stop them. He digs his nails into the palms of his hands to regain control. In his mind, he hears the cries of hundreds of small creatures he slaughtered today. All of them with faces and names, and probably families.

Why? For isana. For more bodies. More elvhen. More soldiers to kill more durgen'len to make more bodies to serve as labor to build more cities and palaces to fill with more servants and soldiers to kill more durgen'len to make more soldiers to....... and on and on and on and on.

An endless spiral of death.

This is what he is.

A weapon.

A monster.

An abomination.

And he repeats the mantra, again and again. As if to secure himself in this new identity. In this new reality. He never was anything else. If he never existed before this, there is nothing to grieve and nothing to regret. He is Mythal's sword. The People's protector.

This is his nature. This was always his nature. The core of him must have always been like this. That is why he is so good at it.

He might have seen himself as a walking stick before.

But in Mythal's hand, he became the spear he always was.

He grits his teeth and repeats the words. Swallows his tears and wipes his face. Heals the bloody indents in his palms with a casual thought and looks into the mirror.

Mythal's protective brand cuts through his features like his sword through her enemies.

We cannot change our nature by wishing.
