:: "If I could just...” Furi muttered the breath of her words heard only by the tree she was hanging from. Her arms looped around its lowest branch but her legs still swung one leap from the ground. Placing one heel into the tree, reflexively apologizing as she stabbed it with her shoe, she attempted to walk her lower half up and around the tree’s branch to assume a sloth-like position. She was not very versed with climbing trees.
Nevertheless, with much effort and the passing of several minutes Furi managed to wrap her legs around the branch and after excitedly whispering a triumphant “Yes!” found herself stuck. “Maybe, if I...” She tilted her head back to look at the stone wall near the branch. It stood still and far from her reach. “This is much easier in the stories.” Furi told herself. Her arms were getting sore and she was wondering if it would be better to simply run out. She let her head hang to the side and met eyes with a stranger who was very intently staring at her as if trying to figure out what sort of creature she was: sloth or human or a combination of both.
“Wait!” Her legs unhooked from the tree as did her arms and she fell with a thump on her bottom. Scrambling to stand up, Furi fidgeted with her hands for a moment before calling out to him. “I’m not a thief, I swear. I’m supposed to be here to meet my marriage partner but you see-” Her eyebrows knitted together and she drew herself up to stand as confident as she had ever been in the span of their meeting and she may have looked somewhat elegant if it had not been for her leafy and bark-stained dress, messy hair, and the way she drew up her fists and pounded them at the air with her argument. “I do not wish to be given away. Perhaps, I have no prospects otherwise but it is becoming the way of this world to see everything in profit and loss. I will not be thought of like that!”
“So,” Furi looked down, continuing on softly. “I was going to climb the tree and hop onto the wall and escape, like in the books, and perhaps find adventure and love on my own.” She met his eyes then and did not waver. “So, if you could help me climb this...” Furi faltered, remembering that her family had assured her, she had claimed it was due to embarrassment but she did want to know for her grand escape, that no one else but their family and him and a server or two would be there and the servers did have uniforms that looked nothing like what he was wearing. The confidence she had been wearing fell to a shocked blankness. “There is no way, I suppose, for you to forget all that is there?”
