cold blooded

when your parents are snakes

and you were raised to charm them

threat displays are self preservation

and its up to you to tiptoe around them.

now back up slowly and quietly, pay attention

walking away means risking getting bitten

and though you might suck out the poison

you’ll still be left with venom.

we’re on the run from genetics, 

but not quite orphaned,

there’s just no word for that kind of abandonment.

in the animal kingdom often parents eat their young.

competition for territory is rife

but human parents are supposed to support you for life.

the problem is that some are less scaffolding 

and more of a slow knife

but in the end its better to bleed once 

than for the rest of your life.
