Badly Drawn Boy, 2000 - The Hour of the Bewilderbeast promo shots. . Working with Damon Gough was a real treat. We had a bunch of ideas... some loosely inspired by new wave cinema, others Damon’s own quirky twist... We talked over locations and with a bag of clothes and few props set off to shoot gorilla style at Victoria train station, Gatwick airport and various other spots across London including spontaneously blagging our way into The Dorchester Hotel’s piano lounge (thanks to Sophie who was doing PR and on the shoot with us). I especially enjoyed doing the shaving photos in the station toilets. It just felt like we’d get into some sort of trouble. My favourite image to make though was the last one at Gatwick arrivals. Damon nestled himself among the Cab drivers and nonchalantly held up his sign and I walked into the arrivals exit as far as possible, turned around and took some shots as I walked out. This was in 2000, the year before 9/11. Trying something like that now would be almost impossible. The album went on to win the Mercury music prize later that year. . A couple of weeks back I was scheduled to run a workshop @emergencecreative festival. Of course it was postponed along with everything else. I’d been going through my archive in preparation. It was a lot of fun rediscovering some old photo shoots. Many of which I’ve not looked over probably since shipping my archive to Australia more than a decade ago.
