Flyer for a showing of Scopitones (early rock videos) at The Somerville Theater in Somerville, MA, circa 1991.
A frequent weekend activity for me as a teen was getting the hell out of the suburbs, taking the commuter rail (Fitchburg line) into “the city.” For me, this meant hopping off at the Porter Square station in Cambridge. Transferring to the T, a stop on the Red Line in one direction would take me to Harvard Square, the prime record-shopping and all-around hangout destination. But a stop in the other would land me in Davis Square in adjacent Somerville.
There were a couple of good record stores in Davis Square (Disc Diggers was a the big one), plus an ice cream parlor and a few interesting second-hand shops. But the real draw was The Somerville Theater, home of second-run and art-house movies, plus specialty animation and music programming.
This flyer is for one such program, a showing of “Scopitones,” or early rock music videos. Love the cut-n-paste pastiche design, which I likely why I saved this.
