Book progress: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (ch. 11-16)

I think maybe I was SOMEWHAT mistaken on what a romp through the pop culture of yesteryear this book would have been. It was really saturated in that shit toward the beginning, but now it's not quite as referential, which I kind of like and kind of dislike. I like that the book now seems to be focusing more on building a story of its own, and not using other media as a series of crutches, but on the downside, there is less that I feel like talking about in my posts here. Oh well, maybe I'll just start reading longer segments between posts. The big focus of this segment was the “sixers” taking control of the egg hunt. They're this organization that was introduced early on, this big evil corporation with tons of employees at their disposal, all searching for the egg, being paid well, under the condition that they turn ownership of the egg over to the head of the company upon finding it. They were just kind of a joke in the beginning of the story, when nobody knew thing one about finding the first key, but once the key is found, they become a lot more malicious. They offer Wade a nice executive job with them, so he can tell them how to get the first key and otherwise be a consultant. When he refuses, because fuck the man, they instead blow up the trailer tower that he lives in, which he was not in at the time. So by the end of the segment, he's fleeing to Columbus Ohio, with this corporation presumably believing he's dead. Five people get through the first gate before the sixers take over. Or, as they're apparently known, the “sux0rz.” And really, I thought the focus of this book would be 80s pop culture, not turn-of-the-century internet slang that nobody uses anymore, and that people still didn't use in 2011 when this book was written. That first gate basically involves “playing” through the lead role of the entire movie Wargames, which I have not seen. Maybe I should? The only five people to make it through the first gate are Wade, Aech, Artemis (seriously fuck your leet speak) and two random Japanese brothers named Daito and Shoto. I'm assuming these two guys were introduced so they can die tragic deaths later on or something. The five of them meet in Aech's chat room, and basically nothing happens except that they all agree not to team up, just like it was before the contest really kicked off. But at the end of this chapter, SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS HAPPENS. A stack of comic books just randomly falls off a table in the room, and we're supposed to just assume that it was an obscure programming glitch. But I mean, obviously it wasn't. I'm still not writing off the possibility of Aech being a sixer spy, or some other kind of malicious double-crosser out to destroy the contest. We know so little about him, it makes sense for him to have a hidden agenda. But I bet Artemis turns out to be not only the real deal, but an irl girl who looks exactly like her avatar, because the book has to have a romance plot of some kind. I don't think this book would be as popular as it is if it was subversive enough to abolish that trope.
