Adaptations owe nothing to their source material beyond being good works of art and yes if the source material is good there’s likely some benefit in staying partially faithful to have some of that good rub off, but when one is changing mediums (say, from book to film) being slavishly adherent to the original is more likely to hurt the adaptation’s quality than help because what is beautiful and transcendent on the page is often not compelling on screen and a totally different route must be reached to approximate the same feeling. ALSO, sometimes. The adaptor wants to say something different than the original. Sometimes it’s time for the message to change. That’s fucking OKAY. Holy shit I’m being serious go read the original if it’s that important to you and especially if this is the kind of work that has HUNDREDS of adaptations already, go find one that gels with you and your perspective on the original work instead of insisting the adaptation is some blight on humanity or a personal offense to you.
