“oh shut it you,” she shushes. the complaint, the dramatic lilt to dream’s quiet, smooth voice edged with pain should reassure her. it shouldn’t scare her. yet it does. long history reminds death that she’s seen far worse than the trickle of blood. she’s guided souls from fields of bodies, from blood baths, from the worst whispers of human history. and yet history does not diminish her fear for the last time her brother fell into danger, it was a trap meant to ensnare her. “come on, sit up,” she orders, her usual smile slipping. “let me look at you.”

     POSED TO ANY OTHER ENTITY IN THE ENTIRE WORLD     &  any other plane,   the answer would have been so simple.   who could not be happy here?   the dreaming is everything anyone could ever ask for⸺⸺   a thought  &  your wildest fantasies come true.   in that regard,   hob is no different:   he adores dream's realm.   the library could be his home for weeks at a time,   he can play fetch with gargoyles,   he can be surrounded by dream at every step.   it's utterly beautiful,   it's perfect   .  .  .   &  it's not who he is.   so sitting with his husband in the lavish green of the fiddler,   hands resting side by side their fingers just barely touching,   he smiles at him  &  it is almost apologetic.    "i could be happy with you anywhere."    that much is the truth!   as long as they are together,   by dream's side is the perfect place to be.    "&  i promise,   one day i will stay here with you."    at that,   he gently rests his hand atop his husband's,   their fingers interlacing.    "but not today.   not tomorrow  &  probably not the day after.   there's still too much i haven't done while awake.   i've always wanted to go skydiving,   can you imagine i've never been?"    a stupid example but just one of so many.   hob has never been to the north pole,   either.   never seen the rain forest.   never tried to make coffee with more coffee instead of water⸺⸺    "there are less extreme examples but the point is:    i still have things to do   .  .  .   so for as long as there are still students with light in their eyes,   i'll stick to the waking world.   but i promise you,   one day we'll live here together."

“ is that what i seem to you, morpheus? a demanding creature? ” zisa thinks she can be, if she is so inclined, but she hasn't been inclined in centuries. she has kept to herself in the deep, dark woods, a piece of ravka she has dared to call home. here she both resides and presides; the land bows to her — sankta zisa of the dark woods, maiden of the silver lake, daughter of halmhend. her peace is all she wanted when she retreated into the forest, once the land claimed a name and crowned its first king. it is enough. or it was. before nikolai lantsov darkened her doorstep in his raptor-form. “ shall i ask what brings you here, old friend? aside from making vague statements about the state of my greed, that is. ” the question accompanies a smile, just a small one, partially hidden behind her curtain of flaxen hair. zisa kneels by her small pond, throws a handful of dried bread on the water and watches as its surface comes alive with the frenzy of feeding fishes. she looks up then, pale blue eyes regarding her dark-clad companion. “ here to wish me luck? ” she speculates. “ i am bound for os alta soon, on reliable invitation. ”

his sentiment is an echo of others that followed before. lyanna feels a slight pang in her chest, but she keeps it to herself, only letting out a disgruntled noise in his direction. “ tch. i could say the same thing about you, you know. ” she idly turns a page of her book; it is small and tattered, and full of illustrations of flowers. she bought it off a street vendor selling various wares and old family heirlooms, for a fraction of a price as repayment for a favor ( lyanna had nursed the woman's aged mule back to health through knowledge she gleaned from having her own horse and spending inordinate amounts of time at winterfell's stables. )

“ i don't feel as smart as you think i am, besides. ” another turn of the page, but the she-wolf's gray eyes is turned inwards, not really seeing what's before her. smart, brave, capable. she used to be under the illusion that she is all of those things, but with everything that has happened, she has grown to doubt herself. if she truly possessed all those qualities, she wouldn't have ended up on that tower. just then, a realization hits her. lyanna sits up on her cot, eyeing her companion with some apprehension. “ am i asleep right now? ” she asks, squinting against the pale sunlight streaming through an open window. “ am i dreaming? ”
