Songru - #27 - “Let me walk you home.”
Haru wasn’t one to stare and fall for a woman he just saw. He was a man who had responsibilities to his father, to his family, and he couldn’t wander off in the town grinning at every woman that happened to stop by. There was a time and a place for silly dreams, and while he was running errands for his parents’ store was not the time.
But he couldn’t help it. She was so beautiful.
After dropping off some goods at the Mang house, Haru planned on heading straight back home to sweep up the store. Just as he was about to put his head down and begin his trek back, a bright light caught his eye.
In hindsight, it was probably nothing, but he still found himself looking up.
And spirits above, thank goodness he did, for he saw her.
The young woman dressed simply, but she was breathtaking as she perused the market stands with a hint of a smile on her face.
Something in his head, or perhaps even his heart, told him to walk over to the woman. To say hi, to ask a silly question, something.
So he did. He had no idea why he felt the need to approach the woman, but he knew that he had to. Otherwise, he’d be filled with regret.
As he approached the stand the woman stood at, he raised his hand and spoke. “Uh, hi.”
The woman looked up at him, and she was still smiling. “Hi, there.”
“I—uh—” spirits, why was his foot in his mouth all of a sudden? He couldn’t seem to form a coherent sentence now that she stood right in front of him. After what felt like an eternity, he finally was able to introduce himself. “I’m Haru.”
“Hi Haru, I’m Song,” she replied kindly. “Is there something wrong?”
“No! Not at all, I just—” he took a deep breath, calming his nerves so that he could be honest with her. “I saw you from across the street, and I had to come over to say hi.”
“And I’m normally this way, but you’re just so beautiful, I just had to say something.”
Song grew quiet, and Haru feared he said all the wrong things. “I—sorry,” he continued sheepishly. “I didn’t mean to bother you but—”
“You really think I’m beautiful?”
Haru looked into her bright eyes, and smiled. “Yes, I do.”
Just as Song was going to reply, the merchant handed her two bags full of produce.
“Do you need help with those bags?” he blurted.
Song appeared surprised by his question. “You want to walk me home with all my groceries?”
“Yeah, I do. Let me walk you home. If, of course, you’re comfortable with that.”
She contemplated the offer for a moment, but then, she smiled at him, and his heart jumped in his chest. “Only if you’re fine with long walks.”
Song began to walk in the opposite direction of his house. And with a grin on his face, he followed.
