This is a song I wrote about fear of the future and dreaming of a world that doesn't exist

a recurring motif in L&M

one I usually call the “Memories In The Sky” motif, usually sang by The Fates

so here are the lyrics:

Raise your head and raise it high

Look for memories in the sky

Run, boy, before you’re gone

Run, soldier, for the setting sun

Take your aim, so sharp and true

Darling if you only knew

Take your gun and raise it high

Shoot for memories in the sky

meaning, going in order of lyric appearance:

1: sort of a tone setter, doesn’t mean much other than for Achilles to grow up or mature. mostly used as set up for a lyric change in a reprise (we’ll talk abt it later)

2: again, Achilles growing into himself, looking for ‘memories’ (previous heroes) in the sky (constellations

3-4: Achilles will someday lose his former self, a ‘boy’ to the soldier inside him

5-6: the fates often taunt characters doomed by the narrative. achilles is no exception, saying this in reference to Hector’s death leading to Achilles’

7-8: repeats 1-2, but with a slightly modified tone with the added taunting of the previous lines.

these lyrics are reprised a few times throughout the show, most notably in How A Hero Falls (the song where Paris kills Achilles)

so now the lyrics are about Paris as well as Achilles

“Take your gun and raise it high” these two men are now grown; they don’t need to mature, they need to fight. A common theme in L&M is that these characters were robbed of their childhoods; girls becoming bedslaves is parallel to boys becoming soldiers

“the boy is gone” what is foreshadowed in lines 3-4 of the original comes to fruition, achilles is now wholly a soldier and a machine. as well, paris has had an extreme moment of clarity brought about by hector’s death.

“the target looked like you” about that moment of clarity, Paris blames himself for Hector’s death (more detail on that here). also is supposed to kind of remind the audience of hector and patroclus

the last 2 lines take on a different meaning now; it’s no longer about becoming a hero like those before you, it’s about destroying the past and destroying the overwhelming guilt inside paris. the gods created the trojan war to end the age of heroes and that is what will happen
