thank u for being there for me through so much lately bro. sonic frontiers genuinely changed everything for me during a tough time in my life and i became so invested that i platinumed that game and have genuinely become a superfan i would do anything for you bro. thank you. here's to 35 more years and more man! I even ate a chili dog today just for you!
For a long time my favorite classic Sonic games were CD and 3&K. I had seen Sonic CD at a Computer City in '97 and begged my bioDad for it. I had been watching the TV shows and loved that little blue bastard.
I fell even deeper in love when I watched the opening animation.

I have always loved good animation and this version of Sonic FUCKED.
So far I had only seen him do Saturday morning cartoon bullshit but this guy meant business and was cool AF.
The loop legs. The attitude. The incredible music and stage designs.
2/10 game, very hard to master and only good when ported and remastered. Also INCREDIBLY hard to mod. Also easily one of the best innovations of his character and animation across his career.
Then I saw the 3&K PC collection and begged for that too.
9/10 game, play Sonic 3 AIR
Bought five different copies of the Sonic OVA because my tape player/TV combo kept eating the tape
I got the GameCube Mega Collection eventually and finally played 1 and 2.
I was so excited to play them. Finally the games I haven't had access to!
Then 1 and 2 kinda sucked for me back then. At least, 1 was actually a bad time. And 2 was just ok compared to 3&K but at least was as good of a game as CD.
However, 1 being a bad time for me was kind of a let down. I figured the first game would be an amazing experience for me but it was clunky, missing later features, and didn't look or play as good.
Fast forward to today and I do a bunch of modding on my PC and Steam Deck. Especially Sonic retro games and fan games.
I've been shoring up and perfecting my modded versions of 1, 2, 3&K, CD, and Triple Trouble 16-bit. Just so I can have my little perfect run of retro Sonic games and can play them comfortably when the want arises.
It's been such a breath of fresh air to play a version of 1 that has elemental shields. And the insta-shield. And being able to have Tails even if he is a bit janky.
What inspired me to post this was finding a mod for Sonic 1 Forever that made it so when you had 50 rings and got the Big Ring at the goal post, you would just start the special stage on top of the emerald instead of having to fight to not throw up to get it. You already did the hard part of keeping 50 rings until the end of the act.
It fundamentally changed my experience of 1. Now I have a wonderful time playing it instead of dreading replaying; feeling like I can't get all the emeralds and get the good ending.
All this to say...
1.) Mod your favorite games
2.) You are valid to want to change things about the media you like and that doesn't diminish your love for them. Everyone interacts and discovers media in different ways.
Fallout: New Vegas is something I've been meaning to give another try, so why not tomorrow!
Then on Saturday, I wanna pay another trip to Sonic Forever (an enhanced version of Sonic 1)!
Catch em both @ 2 PM over on
