Snake River Conspiracy - More Than Love
Snake River Conspiracy - Sonic Jihad (07/11/2000)
This album be scratching an itch for me
Ahhhh, the curious case of Snake River Conspiracy. Never heard of ‘em? Not surprising. They lasted about as long as a single square of toilet paper after an all-you-can-eat Taco Bell buffet. And, like toilet paper, they disintegrated upon releasing one album and were sent right to the sludge digester tank to be broken down into compost. But enough of the TP analogies, because this group was good. No, better than good. If they had kept going, they eventually would have been great and very successful. Alas it was not to be. They had a cool backstory too. This was a passion project founded by ex-Third Eye Blind bassist Jason Slater and vocalized by the surprisingly smoking voice of Tobey Torres, an exotic dancer, who can REALLY sing and scream her lungs out. Their one and only album, 2000’s Sonic Jihad, was moderately successful, but was followed by bitter infighting to the extent that everything broke down within a few years. After going through the entire album, I can tell you for sure; it’s lousy with covers, it’s completely uneven in tone from track to track, and it almost sounds like the content should have been split into two different albums; one album for pop fans and one album for metal heads like myself. Which also leaves me in the difficult position of not knowing who exactly to recommend their music to. However, out of the smoldering wreckage there were a few glints of genius, a lot of ingenuity and a massive and pendulous set of balls. One of their apparent group goals was to make music that was harder, more intense, and far more offensive than even the most cutting-edge acts of their time. And although their sound may be gratingly lopsided, somehow, it kinda works! The above track is Somebody Hates You, and it’s a completely bipolar affair just like the entire album was. It jumps moods, and even sound ingredients like the group were on a combination of speed, peyote buttons and opium during its development. Its immature in both structure and lyrics, it’s as cognitively confused as Joe Biden during a standard speech… and by God, I can’t help but want even more! Smash play and enjoy this group that went the way of the Dodo bird! Full album here if you’re in a particularly variable mood.
Circa early 2000′s. Just wanted to add an addendum, their group founder Jason Slater passed away in 2020 due to liver failure. Their two surviving members, Ms. Torres and guitarist Mitchell Doran swear you’re going to get a new album in 2023. Not exactly striking while the iron is hot guys, but better late than never.
