George Ervin "Sonny" Perdue III (born December 20, 1946-) is an American politician who served as the 31st United States secretary of agriculture from 2017 to 2021. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the 81st governor of Georgia from 2003 to 2011 and as a member of the Georgia State Senate from 1991 to 2002. On March 1, 2022, the Board of Regents of University System of Georgia appointed Perdue as the system's 14th chancellor, effective April 1, 2022.

USDA Research Agencies 'Decimated' By Forced Move. Undoing The Damage Won't Be Easy

Some of you may recall me railing last year about the casuistry of Perdue’s USDA treatment of career civil servants when he ordered that two of its most important research arms be peremptorily moved half a continent away from Washington D.C. to Kansas City. It was asking career scientists to give up their D.C. area homes, transfer their children to new schools, disrupt not only their careers but those of their spouses.

And you know what? One heckuvalot of them quit. But that was the original intention of the Trump Administration with its distaste for both professional government and science.

... more than half of agency employees decided to quit rather than uproot their families and move. Despite aggressive recruiting in Kansas City and making many new hires, both USDA research agencies are now roughly half the size they were before the move.

"The agencies have been decimated. Their ability to perform the functions they were created to perform – it doesn't exist anymore," Evans says.

The number of economic reports published by ERS has dropped by half. NIFA administered university research isn't getting the guidance or scrutiny it once did. Experienced staffers like Desiree Rucker at NIFA say they are running on fumes.

"I've gone from running two or three programs to five, six, seven programs. We're two years behind. I can't keep up. In a situation where I'm just not happy anymore," Rucker says.

‘Unconscionable’ Trump administration cuts food stamps in middle of coronavirus pandemic

Moving ahead with change in eligibility for SNAP benefits labelled 'particularly cruel' as people are advised to stay home due to coronavirus pandemic

As you may recall, the Trump administration is implementing new, harsher rules governing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (“SNAP”), formerly known as “food stamps.” The administration is not attempting to combat fraud or waste, but, very simply, to give the poor less money. Its only stated goal is specifically to limit, to the maximum extent possible, all state waivers of SNAP’s work requirements.

By the administration’s own estimate, these new rules will deprive over 750,000 of the poorest Americans (primarily minorties) of the measly $1.40 per person per meal that SNAP provides. But hey, starving the poor will save the government over a billion dollars a year! The new rules take effect on April 1.

Now COVID-19 has severely impacted the ability of many Americans to work, even if they have employment. But if you were wondering whether this might prompt the Trump administration to reconsider its hard-line position... well, you haven’t been paying attention for the past three years.

“The Trump administration will move ahead with plans to bring in strict work requirements for people that use food stamps -- even in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. People that need to stay home to stop the spread of the disease could find themselves forced to work in order to keep their benefits. If they stay home they may find themselves kicked off the programme that helps them afford food.”

School lunch programs cut; children suffer The rule changes will not only impact food stamp recipients, they will also reverberate in cuts to school lunch programs.  As of this writing it remains unclear exactly how many children will lose school lunches.  But according to USDA regulations  942,000 children could be cut from school lunch programs. Feed the people, not the Pentagon Major cuts in food stamps (SNAP benefits) will also mean that many small grocery stores who service the poor in both rural areas and cities will have to close their doors. But not the Pentagon! This year the military got a $130 billion increase on top of the trillions they received. In addition to these cuts, social security disability will also be on the chopping block.  People will starve while billionaires like Bezos pay next to nothing in taxes. Millionaire farmer Sonny Perdue also attacks workers rights on the job Under the direction of millionaire Georgia farmer and politician, Sonny Perdue, the Trump appointed head of the USDA, also overhauled slaughterhouse rules that threaten the safety of workers.   These rule changes removed federal limits on pork processing line speeds.  While highly profitable for the meat industry, it puts workers in danger of higher rates of injury both acute and long term.  The United Food and Commercial Workers Union filed a suit to suspend the rule change.   We will not be invisible On April 4, the anniversary of the assassination of Rev.
