Q&A with Sonya - Part 1
Which role from a movie of the past you would have liked to play?
Not my age bracket just yet, but Ellen Burstyn as Sara Goldfarb in Requiem for a dream is mesmerising. The character is so well written (as is the whole film) and she brought her to life beautifully.
Talking about #Shakespeare400, which of his heroines would you like to play?
I'd have to go for Lady M, instead.
If you could choose an historical character to play, which one would it be?
This perhaps isn't historic enough, but Simone DeBeauvoir would be an enthralling challenge.
How do you prepare yourself for a role?
I go with my instincts initially. Do research around that. If I'm on the right track, I'll continue finding what feeds the character (and the piece as a whole) in the most interesting way, in terms of back story, their psychology, physicality and objectives. I enjoy finding books that feel character appropriate. They're a nice little extra and a good way to pass the time on set. Music is very useful as well. I have certain things I'll always do as far as working on the script goes, but finding the character can take many different forms. Part of the fun is to be creative and play with new ways to find them.
In which city would you like to live or visit?
I love London. I think this will be home for me for a while. That said, I could be tempted by Berlin and would relish the chance to live in NYC, if work took me there. As for cities to visit. I'm enjoying working my way through...Steadily.
Tell us a quote that you like.
" For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings, that I should scorn to change my state with kings." Final couplet of Shakespeare's 29th sonnet.
"It's just a ride' Bill Hicks.
Can you suggest:
a song to listen- Wear Sunscreen, Baz Luhrman. Poignant and smiling inducing, whatever age you are.
a book to read- As In just one? That's impossible. Any Orwell. A fine balance, Rohinton Mistry is a beautiful book. I'm in a book club with friends and more recently the stand outs were 'We need new names' by NoViolet Bulawayo and 'Neuromancer' by William Gibson. Both very different but well worth a read. I'm also really enjoying Saga and The Walking Dead (graphic novels) at the moment. I'm a massive fan of the show and have become a bit obsessed.....
a movie to watch- Victoria by Sebastian Schipper. An incredible feat, in front of and behind the camera. Inspiring.
Which songs are in your playlists right now and which song of this last months you continue to listen?
Hozier. Kaleo. Janis Joplin. Jazz is a regular feature in my ears, though I like a bit of everything to be honest.
What do you think happened to Oracle after the run with Hero?
A lot of running....Away. Existential crisis. Large glass of vino, to rival Dionysus and eventually started work on her book deal; 'Oracle: My Own Prophecy'....I think it's open to a lot of great options. Alas we shall never know.
Is there any actress of the past who inspires you?
Lauren Bacall was very special. She knew who she was and wasn't afraid to show it.
What would you never give up?
Time to myself & tea. Time alone, with a good brew.
What are the tv series with which you grew up?
When I was much younger 'Around the world in 80 days'. 'Sesame street', 'Wind in the willows'. Later 'Sister,Sister' and 'Kenan and Kel', if my brother had the remote. My friends and I loved 'Two guys,a girl and a pizza place' and 'Friends', of course. We still adore it and probably always will.
If you had your own talk show, who would you first three guests be? Hmm.... Very excellent question. To begin with: Tilda Swinton, Nawaal El Sadaawi & Giulio Tononi.
Is there a movie or a book that influenced you greatly?
I grew up in love with The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings. I still have the cassette tapes of the radio adaptation, with Ian Holm and will never be rid of them. Movie wise, I'll never forget the first time I watched The Godfather and 2001: A Space Odessey. I was completely and wonderfully blown away. They're as close to perfect you can get. In my opinion.
If a movie was being made on your life and you could choose the actress to play you, who would you choose and why?
Olivia Coleman. I'm a huge fan. She's able to convey so much through so little and deeply, whether it's in a comedy or a drama.
If you had a "theme song" what would it be?
Any Queen. In particular don't stop me now. Video, India Aire.
Are you a video gamer?
Alas no. I'd only ever get a short way into Tomb Raider before ominous howls came and I logged off. Or got my brother to finish. I'd get too invested and scared she was going to die. However, when it comes to board games or sports I'm pretty competitive.
What's your favourite song to sing at Karaoke and why?
I don't karaoke a lot, but pretty much any late 70's/80's power ballad. It's an understatement to say I don't do them justice, but points for commitment for sure. 'My endless love', a bit of Diana and Lionel, is a particular favourite
Stay tuned for the second part .... coming soon
