SoonerCon Day Two (Part One): Chillin’ with my crew and meeting the amazing Timothy Zahn!
Even though the Women Are Star Wars panel was generally awful, here are two things the wonderful Timothy Zahn said that I really loved (one from the panel and one I overheard at his table).
- From what I gathered, he’s not a huge fan either of the way Han and Leia were treated in TFA. While acknowledging that Star Wars — and much of media in general — has often been about broken families, he insisted that there’s a place for a healthy family; that you can have a healthy family and conflict at the same time. He cited The Incredibles as a good example of that, and said he hoped that Lucasfilm would keep in mind stories like that as they go forward.
- When he writes, he doesn’t do all his world-building up front. He only comes up with what he needs to serve the characters and the story, letting the plot drive his world-building. That way in the future, when he comes back to write more and needs to do more world-building, he comes with more experience and more years of thought to add to it. It was a good reminder for me that I don’t necessarily have to have everything figured out at first when I write. As I have more life experience and more time to think about my characters and the world they’re in — as I grow with them — I’ll be able to bring more to the story. (I believe this whole conversation was in response to a question about how much he knew about the Chiss when he first started writing about Thrawn — the answer was not much)
So SoonerCon was absolutely amazing and I had the best time, but there was one panel I went to on Saturday that made me really mad. It was called “Strong Women Are Star Wars.” Sounds amazing, right? Timothy Zahn was going to be on the panel, and I was really excited to go celebrate the women of Star Wars and hear Zahn’s thoughts about it (considering he’s created a few of those strong women).
But as soon as it started, it became clear that it was going to be very different than I had envisioned. Almost all the rest of the six panelists (other than Zahn and one woman who ran a geek podcast) knew very little about Star Wars. One man freely admitted that he didn’t even like Star Wars, and he and another man proceeded to loudly vomit words for about 70% of the entire panel even though they had nothing of import to say (figures). The other two women who didn’t know Star Wars very well talked for about 25% of the rest of the time, and while they had some good things to say, most of it was negative — the opposite of a celebration of the women in Star Wars. Zahn’s comments were incredible, thoughtful, and illuminating, and I would have loved to hear more from him, but he was barely given a chance to speak (nor was the lovely podcast lady).
The entire thing turned into a “let’s bash Star Wars” session, and trust me, while I know there are problems with my favorite franchise, and I expected and looked forward to some discussion about the need for feminism in Star Wars, this was terrible. They basically came to the conclusion that Strong Women Aren’t Star Wars — except for Leia; she’s cool, I guess. I came out of there fuming, as did many others I talked to. It was a low point in an otherwise amazing weekend and I’m still mad about it
SoonerCon Day Two (Part Two): Star Wars parade and group picture (not pictured: everyone breaking out in song and dance to “The Saga Begins” by Weird Al — best moment ever), more amazing cosplay + a costume contest, killing Jabba the Hutt yet again (this time with help from my mother from beyond the grave), and generally just having a fantastic time with my sisters and my friends 💙
@darkprincess98 here are some pictures from the Trial of Darth Vader! Also sister @hannahbrandybuck got some video — not sure how to get those to you, but maybe you could work something out?
One selfie and one body-shot of my quickly thrown together Lavellan/ Dalish Elf cosplay from Soonercon. I was working with the DDAL all weekend, so I didn't put too much effort into it. Face paint by Samantha Robb/ Artistic Temperment. However, my sword finally got a name "Enforcer." OwO
Some pictures with cosplayers at soonercon! It was great! XD
