"it's a deep cover hunt. I'll be gone for about two months..." Reagah to Emmalie
Before she had a chance to respond, Emmalie heard a small voice piping up from the small girl clinging to her legs. "Two monfs?" Sophea frowned, pulling her fingers out of her mouth. "How many sleeps is that, Papa? Mama?"
Emmalie sighed and untangled herself from her daughter's grip to lift the toddler up into her arms. "It's a lot of sleeps, Sophea. It's... seventy." She held her free hand up, fingers spread wide. "Fourteen hands, do you remember counting on hands?"
Sophea, young as she was, seemed to get the gist of the point. "A lot of sleeps," she said dejectedly. She looked between her mother and father before scowling, reaching out her arms for Reagah. "No. Papa no go!" The tone of her voice implied a rapidly approaching tantrum. Her eyes were starting to well up with tears when Reagah took her from Emmalie's arms.
"It's ok, Nova, Papa won't be gone forever." The sentiment didn't seem to soothe Sophea, who looked even more upset while she clung to her father. "No go!" She whined into his shirt. Reagah bounced his little girl, trying desperately to keep her calm. "I'll bring you a present back, Nova. And Uncle Torian and Auntie Mako will bring Nadera around to play. Don't you want to see Nadera?"
"No, no, no, no, no." Sophea shook her head back and forth vigorously. Her small fists balled in Reagah's shirt like she was trying to keep her father from leaving, ever.
"She'll be ok." Emmalie whispered to Reagah while he shhh'ed and whispered to the crying girl in his arms. She hoped she wasn't just lying to herself.
