guess who’s thinking about the parallels between jarthur and arkayne after that last episode !!! ME so prepare for a long ramble
So I already made a post about how I think John killing every version of Arthur in the dark world was out of resentment. To me, it very much parallels my interpretation of Kayne killing and torturing other living version of Arthur out of love.
Both John and Kayne have complicated feelings about Arthur. Personally I don’t think it’s something we can understand because I don’t think their emotions are fully human. Kayne kills Arthur out of love because that’s just how he shows his affection. He’s obsessed. He spends so much of his time centered around Arthur, finding ways to make him his or call him home, that it gets pushed to a uh, rather gory extreme. And then there’s John. John can already call Arthur a home. He can call him a friend. But without Arthur, with it being partially Arthur’s fault he was sent back to the dark world, I think part of his way of showing affection was by mirroring Kayne’s. Sure he was still killing Arthur out of hatred and resentment, but eventually there must have been that longing to see him again. I mean the bone cathedral is proof of that !! He used parts of Arthur to mimic the feeling of sharing a body with him again !! That longing for Arthur again, it’s the reason why he asked for Kayne’s help in the first place.
I’ve always seen jarthur and arkayne separately kind of as foils. John and Arthur are narrative foils in their own way, and Arthur and Kayne are narrative foils in their own way. But with the reveal of what John did in the dark world, I think John and Kayne can also be narrative foils. They’ve both killed countless Arthur’s, but while Kayne does it out of love or some reason that’s arbitrary, John did it out of hate and a very calculated reason. They’re two sides of the same coin, in a way.
Additionally: I think it might’ve been during the interview, but it was mentioned that the butcher is a character who parallels Arthur in the way that Arthur is afraid of ending up like him. I think this is the case for John and Kayne. The both of them are very similar, but I think John looks at Kayne and hopes he never ends up like him, because that would be like being the king again, like falling back and losing his humanity again. But now because of what he did in the dark world, and especially because Kayne knows about it, he’s a lot more similar to Kayne than he wants to be.
And then there’s the orchestra. The greatest show of Kayne’s love, the greatest show of John’s guilt, and the greatest way for Kayne to taunt John. Obviously the orchestra was meant to disconcert both Arthur and John, but honestly I think it was meant to horrify John way more. It was like Kayne throwing John’s sins back in his face, a choir of flesh made entirely of Arthur, a direct compliment to John’s own cathedral of bone. In a way, it could have been Kayne saying “you’re just like me. you’re love for Arthur is just like mine.”
What is the most crazy to me now is that everything Kayne said in intermezzo was partly referring to THIS. Remember when he said that him and Arthur are alike? That’s because he knows that in the vast infinity of the universe, Arthur is, in a way, unique. The only one of his kind, just like him. Obviously him being “special” to Kayne is in part the Manager’s doing, but Kayne doesn’t know that. To Kayne, it could be fate that they’re both the only one of their kind, the same kind of special. John practically did him a favor. Even if it’s not the same as every living version of Arthur being dead, they still parallel each other in some twisted way.
In short, the bone cathedral is like the final bridge between jarthur and arkayne to me and I’m absolutely losing my mind about it. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk <3
hey malevolent fans,
what do you call it when the water from the bathtub faucet is too cold ??
I need you at the dimming of the day
Absolutely ridiculous that whenever I hear prominent trade unionist Arthur Scargill's name, I am forever doomed to think of SFTH before anything else.
(rewatching some No More Jockeys and his name came up, followed by Key's ballsy move of "no more men")
I'm gonna emotionally torture Arthur so much
FIGHT! bbc arthur vs excalibur sonic
Kayne malevolent bothers my every waking thought. What a bizarre specimen. He said that unlike other Kaynes he wished to travel between universes. But what did ALL the other Kaynes wish for? Definitely not the end of the worlds since the other universes still exist. He wants the Black Stone for something nefarious which I also don't think will cause the end of the world (based on what I know of Nyarlothotep). He is a God of chaos and there would be nothing chaotic if everything dies. How did he get here? Is Kayne trying to pull other Outer Gods into this plane of existence? He did mention something about having a daughter of sorts, maybe the stone is for her. It would be funny if a crazy ancient god turns out to be the only non-dysfunctional father in the series.
