Loop Number 50
At fifty loops Steve breaks for the first time.
He wakes up crying. The echo of Robin's last words running through his head, no point calling her to calm him down, in a day she'll just be dead again. What's the point. He finally drags himself out of bed, the phone has been ringing, Robin will be late to school.
He pulls the bat out from under his bed and smashes the receiver. He feels a bit better. He takes the bat and smashes the alarm clock, tears apart his room, sobbing. Goes down the hall to his parents room and rips it apart too. Anything within the bat's reach he destroys. It doesn't matter it will all get fixed again anyway.
In the middle of his wrecked home, Steve finally stops.
"Why me?" He whispers into the empty house.
"Why me!" He screams to whatever force has put him here.
Why him? Was this a punishment? A punishment to watch Robin die forever, was the universe telling him it was all his fault, that it would always be his fault? Was it a reward? Was he being given the chance to save her, she deserved to be saved why couldn't Steve save her?
"Please," he whispered.
"Please, please, please, please, please."
Steve would whisper until his house was washed in darkness, until the sun set. He would beg for help, beg for forgiveness, beg for Robin's life, until exhaustion took over and he passed out on the cold floor, alone.
The alarm waking him reminding him that his pleas would not be answered, this was all he would be given, this was all he deserved.
