Any interesting medieval things going on in your world? Partly because I'm interested, and partly to perhaps offset the sudden influx of Jane Eyre questions. I like Jane as much as the next gothic fiction fan, but the amount you've gotten lately is puzzling
This is such a kind ask, and I'm at something of a loss for a reply.
My department met with a college administrator recently. We were informed that all our conference funding for the rest of the year has been cut. We asked if we would get funding next year, and were told that we might (presumably if we are very good.) We were told to be more mindful of our professionalism when dealing with students. We asked for an example of what this might look like, and were refused.
Meanwhile on the teaching front, I'm reporting plagiarists and handing out failing grades to students who didn't cheat, but who appear to have read neither the assigned text nor the assignment guidelines. One of my best students (both intelligent and intellectually curious) asked me why historians use big, complicated words instead of simple ones that are easy to understand.
...I'm sure there is fascinating medieval research being done right now; I just don't have time or energy to find out about it. On a less Depressed Academic note (sorry about that), a recent book I did read and enjoy was this:
