One of the other staff volunteers for our cycler's guest information squad lined up a job on one of the Mars catch stations. I spent some time there, so I wanted to throw her a going away party before our departure window opened back up. At first, it was easy getting people interested in coming, but when it started getting closer to the actual day, people started bailing out one after the other. When we got there, less than half the people I invited came.
I don't understand. Why even agree if they aren't going to come? And it's just a night out, what's so bad about having a little fun?

There's a million reasons people will abandon plans. Sometimes something comes up. Sometimes they're interested in the general idea, but something about the specifics once the plans actually get made turns them off.
For a party, some people will only go if it's small and intimate and they get along with everyone. Others won't bother unless it's big enough that the cops RSVP before the date.
It's the same in politics. Support always drops for a party in an election the second an actual candidate gets chosen.
So don't take it personally, different people are different, and no matter how good you are at making plans it'll never be possible to make everyone happy.
