A/N: Admin Cat decides to be evil and write angst. :3c
“Come on, Acno. Just over here.” A blonde girl called over to her blue haired friend as she climbed farther and farther up the hill.
“Wait up, Anna! You’re going too fast!” The blue haired boy, Acnologia, called back, struggling to keep up with Anna.
“No, you’re just too slow, idiot.”
“Hey!”
Anna sent Acnologia a grin before continuing to climb the hill, reaching the top in seconds. Acnologia let out a heavy sigh and followed her. Once he reached the top, he collapsed on the floor with exhaustion. He tried to catch his breath, closing his eyes in the process.
“My goodness, are you that tired?”
Acnologia opened his eyes and saw two chocolate brown eyes staring back at him. Anna smirked, shaking her head.
“Pitiful.”
“Shut up, Heartfilia! You’re the adventurer here. I’d rather play in the cave but nooo, you drag me up here!” Acnologia sat up, crossing his arms, avoiding Anna’s eyes. “Why the hell did we come up here for anyway?”
To his surprise, he heard Anna laugh behind him. He turned around to see her giggling uncontrollably.
“What’s so funny?”
“Nothing, nothing.” Anna said between her giggles. “You’re-You’re just so cute when you get all pouty.”
Acnologia was taken back and turned a bright shade of scarlet. He quickly jumped to his feet, pointing his finger at Anna.
“I am not pouty nor am I cute! I am a fierce dragon and I expect to be treated as such!”
Anna scoffed, “You’re still going on about that dragon stuff? How the heck are you going to be a dragon when you’re just a human boy?”
“One, I’m fifteen! Two, I will be a dragon! I will be king! Just watch me!” Acnologia huffed, crossing his arms.
“Yeah, yeah. Of course, Dragon King. Now, your majesty, shut up and follow me.” Anna turned around and walked towards a tree.
“Rude.” Acnologia got up and followed her nonetheless.
Once they reached the tree, Anna began to climb it. Acnologia followed her suit.
“Anna, what the hell are we doing? It’s dark.” Acnologia called after the much faster climber.
“That’s the point.”
Acnologia was confused but he decided to just go with whatever his best friend was planning. She always showed him the best of things.
“Hurry your ass. It’s up here.”
“Shut your ass. I’m coming.”
Acnologia reached the branch Anna was sitting on. He sat next to her.
“Okay, I’m going to ask this one last time. What. The. Hell. Are. We. Doing.”
“Calm down, we’re here.”
“Anna, it’s dark as fuck out here. What the hell are we going to see?”
Anna rolled her eyes. “Maybe if you shut up for a sec, I can show you. Just stand up.”
Anna stood up on the branch, carefully balancing herself and sticking her head outside of the leaves on top of the tree. Acnologia sighed heavily, knowing he would probably regret this but did what he was told. And was he ever glad he did.
Acnologia had seen stars before but never so clearly and bright. Standing on top of a tree made the all the more beautiful but that wasn’t the real show It was the thousands of fireflies flying on top of the tree, all around them. It was amazing to say the least.
“You like?” Anna asked, smiling at Acnologia astonished face. He looked at her with a grin three times as big as her own.
“I love.”
“I knew you would.”
“Anna?”
The two teenagers were sitting at the bottom of the tree, deciding that they would hang out a bit before going back to the village.
“Yeah?” Anna had laid her head on top of Acnologia’s shoulder.
“We’re…We’re always be friends, right?”
“Well, of course, you idiot. Best friends forever, remember?”
Acnologia went quiet for a moment, looking out into the distance. Anna lifted her head from Acnologia’s shoulder and poked him in the cheek.
“Hey, don’t be so weird. You know that I’d never leave you and you’d never leave me, right? Even if we leave each other, we’ll always come back to each other in the end. So don’t worry you behind. We’ll always be together. It’s more fun that way.”
Acnologia looked at Anna who smiled at him. He looked back out the distance.
“What if…What I don’t want to stay just friends?”
Anna started to sputter and cough. Acnologia looked at her bewildered.
“How the hell are you choking?! You were even drinking or eating something!” He frantically patted her back.
Once, Anna had caught her breathe, she looked at Acnologia, her cheeks bright red.
“Did you just confessed to me?”
Acnologia looked back at her, his cheek redder than hers.
“No! Yes. Maybe? I dunno! You confused me, okay?! I just- I don’t know if I love you like family or if I love you in that way but all I know is that I want to be with you forever and I’m scared that you’ll leave me because you’ll be on some adventure and meet new people and I’ll just stay here in my cave wondering if you’ll ever come home because why would you ever want to come home when there’s so much out there and- OW! ANNA, WHAT THE HECK?!”
“You’re sputtering nonsense again!” Anna grabbed Acnologia’ face. “Listen to me, you numbskull. You are my greatest friend ever! You’re the person that I’ll always come running to if I ever need someone to run to. Acno, I love you too. I don’t know what kind of love it is either but I can promise you that if I go on an adventure, I’m definitely going to drag you with me whether you like it or not. If for some godforsaken you can’t follow, I’m sure going to come back to you. And you better do the same because we’re going to be together for ever whether it’s as friends or as lovers. So stop being so stupid, okay?”
Acnologia stared back Anna for what seemed like hours. Before she could say another word, Acnologia pulled her into a tight hug.
“Acno?”
“You promise?” Acnologia whispered to her.
Anna smiled, wrapping her arms around her best friend, “I promise and I never break my promises.”
“Hey, Anna, wake up.”
Acnologia held the blonde woman in his arms. Her eyes were closed. She looked so peaceful. At least, she would’ve if it wasn’t for the fact she was covered in blood. The blood was everywhere. Her blood was everywhere.
“Anna. Please. Stop joking.” Acnologia stared at Anna. She didn’t answer him.
“Anna, this isn’t funny. We have to go on another adventure, remember?” Acnologia felt his eyes watering up. He watched as one of his tears felt onto Anna’s peaceful face.
“Anna, come on. There’s so much out there. So much we haven’t found. Adventures, remember, Anna? Your favorite.” The tears were coming out like a waterfall by now. He couldn’t stop them. He would stopped them.
“You promised. You promised we’d always be together. Together forever, remember, Anna? You promised. You never break your promises.” Acnologia choked out. He held Anna close. He knew she wouldn’t answer him. He knew she would never smile her precious smile again. He knew she would never call him an idiot anymore. He knew he could never tell her how much he loved her anymore. He could never do it. It was too late. She was gone.
