so this is carmilla. she is a high school senior when she meets sam and dean, who are also in high school (cira after school special). carmilla is the assistant director of the our town play dean mentions sam being part of in s1 ep 16. she becomes friends with sam as they get ready for the show, taking him under her wing and helping him acclimate to the school. she adores sam and thinks of him as a little brother figure. she has a brother who goes to the middle school across the street and sees a bit of him in sam.

at first her and dean hate each other lol. he hits on her the first time they meet but shocker shes a lesbian (its the 90s so no one knows). dean sees how much sam is enjoying theatre and hanging out with carmilla and gets jealous, feeling shes taking over his role as big sibling. carmilla thinks he needs to get his head out of his ass and after a slightly aggressive pep talk, dean realizes no one could possibly take his place in sammys life. afterwards carmilla and dean have a sort of kinship regarding their protectiveness of sam.

but as always, things start to get bad right as theyre getting good. the ghoul that john is currently hunting makes its way into town and kills carmillas brother as shes cleaning up rehearsal one night. sam and dean are with her when she discovers her brothers death and eventually explain the supernatural to her. she helps them kill the ghoul in honor of her brother and they part ways.

dean watching his worst nightmare being lived out by someone else changes him, this is when he decides to spend the rest of his life as a hunter. he couldnt save someone elses family but he can at least try to save his own. sam on the other hand feels like hes cursed and hunting only makes it worse. every person he meets gets hurt because of him and this lifestyle hes forced to live. he starts to resent hunting.
