How Does Myofascial Cupping Work?
Made popular after Michael Phelps’ swimming race in the 2016 Olympics, cupping became a buzzword when the Olympic athlete was adorned with more than just medals —red bruised cupping marks. People started to become curious about this ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine.
Myofascial cupping is a type of trigger point therapy that combines the techniques of massage therapy with the use of pressurized cups. According to the Chinese medical history, this soft tissue therapy dates back to 300 AD, also made popular in the Middle East and Ancient Egypt. However, myofascial cupping is still used in traditional Chinese medicine.
In the process of Myofascial cupping, different sized suction cups are placed on the skin and pressure is reduced by suctioning out the air. This causes the superficial muscle layer to get drawn into the cup, raising the blood up to surface and creating a bruising effect.
Cupping is primarily used for myofascial release; Myofascial pain refers to the presumed pain and inflammation of the body’s soft tissues. This can develop from muscle injury or excessive strain of a particular muscle. Its symptoms include muscle pain with certain “tender” or “trigger” points—worsened with stress or activity.
So how does cupping really do?
Myofascial cupping therapy focuses on the fascia—spider web-like components of the soft tissue system that covers the body—wrapping around tendons, ligaments, muscles and blood vessels. When injured through repetitive strains or poor postural habits, this network of soft tissue loses its flexibility and bundles up to become tight and restrictive.
The Myofascial cupping process lifts up the fascia through pressurized cups and separates it. This allows for fluid movement and supplies nutrients to the tissues. The improved fluid movement detoxifies, stimulates and improves the range of motion.
Cupping reduces adhesions and boosts hydration, leading to health benefits such as:
· Assisting the joint’s range of motion
· Eliminating the myofascial trigger points and reducing the associated pain
· Reducing the risk of injury
· Reducing tissue inflammation
· Maintaining functional soft tissue
The ultimate goal of myofascial cupping is to loosen soft tissue and increase blood circulation. Cupping can speed up the healing process and reduce the severity of post-exercise muscle soreness.
