1.Resurrection
Stuck between a rock and a hard place? God, She's pathetic. She knows who it is. What it is. Kaelynn-Clementine Violetta Thomas, deceased in the hands of the creature her gut told her not to trust. Respected colleague, brilliant daughter, beautiful soul. But is that truly how she wanted to go? How she wanted to be remembered? It's not true and she knows it.
She knows what they're trying to hide.
It knows she's tired, that she simply just wants to rest, but It also knows she wanted to get back at everyone that's ever hurt without reason.
It knows she wants justice.
That fire is still in you, KC.
Wake up.

Woah! Isn't that a way to start out a story?
This is really the beginning, the start of this big massive snowball that demolished a poor, poor woman's life. That woman being, you guessed it! KC Thomas. Kaelynn-Clementine is what 'KC' stands for, by the way.
Typically, she'd leave that part out. At least, she used to leave it out. I'm not quite sure if she remembers what her real name is anymore, or if she remembers anything from before at all.
Anyway, you're not here for my rambling. You're here for a story!
Well, that is why you're here, right?
Then a story I shall give!
Our lovely protagonist is a criminal profiler that works for the FBI. Unfortunately, the best, which means she is constantly rushing around to solve cases in different states. A working woman! Who doesn't love that?
Cases like the ones she's encountered are rather...tame. Until, all of sudden everything seemed as if hundreds of people had snapped. In very different places, obviously. Killings across the board in multiple different states, counties...yet no leads. The killer's signatures were all over the place, happening too soon in broad locations for it to be one person. Unexplainable deaths that were very commonly questioned if another human being was even capable of causing such a scene appeared too quickly for the publics liking. For her liking.
Little to nothing was found at these scenes by local or state police, causing worry and panic. Exactly what they didn't need. Not to solve things like this. Only inflating the twisted minds egos to think they can get away with more.
To think that they can still continue to hide.
Regardless, they wouldn't be found.
The world would be blissfully ignorant to their existence. As they have been for thousands of years. Tales of old describe hideous creatures, most thought of to control their children through fear. But what if these things truly existed?
What if the monsters in the dark are far more than something to keep us from getting up at night? What if they truly hide in your shadow, watching, waiting? Picking the perfect time to tear you limb from limb without another soul even questioning if your safety was a concern.
Death is an infectious beast, a virus that spreads into cells that It sees potential in. Death liked to think of Itself as a simple mediator, a neutral chaperone with a firm tone that told many over and over "No second chances", but not even Death itself is immune to bending the rules. There KC Thomas lay in a bed of blood soaked leaves and flowers draped over her severe wounds. Her bottom jaw was only still attached in the socket on one side and held to her upper jaw with whatever tendons and muscle survived the hit. Her torso was mangled, it was hard to tell if skin was even there in the first place. Her eyes were nearly glazed over. The creature that had wept over her life disappeared without a trace, mourning the only friend it ever had in zero proximity to her. Out of all the bloody, mangled bodies - Hers was the only one given any effort of respect.
Death, as It did with all human lives coming to an end, stayed close. The pure determination of the woman was heroic, and so when her soul had almost reached that light at the end of the tunnel, Death attached Itself to her body in the form of a small, pitch black spot on exposed skin. It's tendrils drag her soul back to Earth as they simultaneously cocoon the cold veins of her motionless, pale body.
The sensation of resurrection was a subtle burn in her lungs in the blurry reawakening of the world. Then the burn gradually increased, from her lungs, to her face, to her torso and legs, from her arms and back, then it had just stopped. Confusion overwhelmed her mind, feeling somewhat nostalgic of the area around her...though she wasn't sure she had ever been here before. If she had, she did not remember. In fact, she didn't remember anything at all.
'Silly girl, of course you don't remember anything.'
She looked around to find the source of the voice, but saw no one at all. Her confusion simply melts to a defensive irritation as she calls out, "Who's there?" She's taken aback by her voice as the words left her mouth. Had it always been so...haunting? Her hand is brought up to press against it, as if her fingers could figure out what felt so off about her voice.
'You humans call me many things. Angel of Death. Father Time. The Grim Reaper. However, I feel as if Death is the only thing suitable to call me.'
She blinked, silenced for a moment before a toothy grin spreads across her face as she laughs. "Death? Seriously? Death isn't a being that speaks, it's just something that happens when the universe decides its time for someone to go. Seriously, where the hell are you? I'm getting tired of your mind games." But this disembodied voice continued on,
'And I'm getting quite tired of your naivety. I brought you back to life to help me, not ridicule me.'
She can't help but scoff, shaking her head. "Help you with what? Killing people? Not my thing." The voice can only sigh. A scythe, one-bladed with intricate carvings in the blade, sleek black handle with what looked to be white lights in small lines is materialized before her. The scythe falls forward, She quickly catches it, dumbfounded. All of a sudden, listening to this "Death" person didn't sound too crazy.
'I see potential in you, girl. Potential that would've been wasted if I were to just let you go into the afterlife. You have a drive for setting things right, I respect that. But your second life comes with a price. You reap for me. Souls that fit your criteria that have outplayed me for far too long. Keep the scythe talking, your survival depends on it.'
She shakes her head, quickly. This was too much. She just woke up from what felt like the worst hangover of her life and now this guy is spewing out information about reaping souls for him? Her brows furrow as her hand, which had seemed paler than before, runs over the blade. "Honestly man, I have no idea what you just said to me. Can you dumb it down a little? You're really confusing me here," She says, rubbing her temple with her other hand as she tried to soothe her ever growing headache.
'You work for me because I brought you back to life and you use your scythe to take the souls of people who have been avoiding me which can also be people that are "wrong-doers". You have to keep reaping souls to stay alive.'
"Mhm...mk, mk. So you're basically an army recruiter, gotcha," She says, a teasing lilt to her voice though her facial expression is dry. "Well, fine. Its not like I want to die. Again, apparently."
'Great. Congratulations, you're a Soul Reaper now.'
"That easy? Man, I didn't even need to make a resume or anything." She quips, spinning the scythe in her hand. "Soul Reaper. Hm, I like that."
And so it began, the start of becoming exactly what she sought to destroy.
