                                 TASK ONE: MUSIC !

illyana rasputina | bad reputation by joan jett

I don't give a damn 'bout my reputation I've never been afraid of any deviation An' I don't really care if you think I'm strange I ain't gonna change

there are a lot of songs that i felt could apply to illyana at various points in her life, but i decided i didn’t want to give her a song necessarily dark or angsty. while her past would certainly fit it, and it’s shaped her into who she is, she’s very accepting of this and of who she is. illyana doesn’t hesitate to be forward about all that she’s been through and though many of her own teammates tend to be afraid of her or what she may do at any point in time ( ie. even in comics, emma frost has said ‘she scares the hell out of me’ ), she’s rarely offended by it. so i wanted to choose a song that was more about knowing and accepting who she is, for better or worse.

lorna hasn’t always made what would be considered the right choice, her affiliation with the x-men and her status as a ‘hero’ of any sort has varied and could be called questionable. she hasn’t shared in xavier’s pacifism, but doesn’t go to the same extreme of her father’s views. she’s witnessed hatred and the death of her own people in ways that broke her. she’s lost her way before and has done things in her anger that she regrets, but she strives to be better. lorna tries to put her pain to better use, to put her rage to better use and has hope for a better world for everyone that doesn’t require one extreme or the other, and she wants to help others find better ways instead of suffocating when a situation feels hopeless.

this song was really a lot about vibe to me, and is fairly straight forward. yelena was raised in the red room, to follow and execute orders no matter what they were, she can be cold and won’t hesitate to take a life – but when she became disillusioned about that life, she saw the world for what it really was and that it can be just as mean as she is. she doesn’t serve on the sides of good and evil – she occasionally takes jobs that benefit her, but she no longer answers to anyone. if you squint, you can see where some sort of morality comes through – getting girls off working on the streets to become models for her own companies to protect them from men and anyone that would take advantage of them. she may not be a gentle touch, but she believes in ensuring the agency of others. yelena very simply isn’t afraid of the darker places in life and has a sense of realism for what the world is.

Let's dance to Joy Division And celebrate the irony Everything is going wrong But we're so happy

reed would be the type of guy who would listen to joy division. but instead of using an actual joy division song, i used another band’s song because it personified reed and his philosophy. he would definitely dance to joy division and celebrate the irony because as intelligent as he is, reed welcomes being told he was wrong. he welcomes healthy discussions even if it meant he’d be proven wrong. reed also finds the silver linings in everything, especially when he’s with his family. everything could go wrong now but he’d be happy if he was with his family.

maria is a no-nonsense woman who knows where her loyalties lie: the protection and survival of earth and its creatures. she knows she’s intimidating and she uses that to her advantage. this song reminded me of her, especially since she has no regard as to who she’s facing, as long as she was doing her job. maria can also be very strict, and if need be, heads will roll among the people she’s working with, as long as it gets the job done.

i’m so thankful i’m a genius i’m a king, i’m a boss remember my name

okay no lie, i was torn between this and epilogue: young forever by bts lmao. i eventually picked this because this song had the same arrogance and reluctance on leading just like amadeus. sometimes he’s very arrogant over the fact that he’s the leader of the agents of atlas, but it’s actually just a front because he still doesn’t want to lead a team when he’s always second-guessing himself. nevertheless, he keeps his feet firmly planted on the ground until it’s time to kick ass. the melody itself is a personification of amadeus because the song combines modern trap sounds with traditional korean instruments, which is technically amadeus growing up with two cultures: korean and american.

also fun fact: daechwita is actually traditional korean music that’s played during military marches and royal processions. agust d sampled an actual daechwita in his song with the same name.

this whole song is about revenge and avenging a loved one. harry’s relationship with his father, norman, is a complicated one. norman isn’t getting any father of the year awards soon but harry finding out that his dad was green goblin and the very real threat of his dad disappearing had him taking up the hobgoblin mantle. there’s still humanity in him and his friendships are keeping him grounded, but the more he’s in the hobgoblin persona, the faster he’s losing it.

ᴛᴏɴʏ: the good, the bad, the dirty -- (panic! at the disco)

it’s panic! you know tony would love to be all about that ac/dc vibe, but really, under all of that he’s mostly panic. and disco. don’t let him fool you. and that title. if that doesn’t scream tony to you, i don’t know what does.

there are tons of lines that resonate with tony: 

truth is that it was always going to end // this symphony buzzing in my head // took a market of filth // and sold it like summer

this just screams pre-IM1 tony. 

if you wanna start a fight // you better throw the first punch // make it a good one

and here’s im1/im2 and avengers-era tony -- either the one to start the fight, or to give as good as he gets if someone throws one at him. 

there's only two ways that these things can go // good or bad and how was I to know // that all your friends won't hold any grudges // i got the final judgement

and here’s im3, age of ultron, civil war, infinity war and endgame tony, in a head-over-heels roll down hill.

because it isn’t tony if there isn’t a reference to a good time, amirite. but at the same time, that’s him - a bit good, a bit bad, definitely a bit dirty. 

ᴊᴇᴀɴ: shallow -- (lady gaga)

ok, disclaimer -- lady gaga is not the first artiste to spring to mind when i think jean grey. i mean, i can’t see jean running around to the tune of bad romance or alejandro. nopes. but lady gaga is such an incredibly talented lady with such an amazing creative range, so--! i picked this song mainly for the lyrics, and of course the sheer power in gaga’s voice when she sings.

here goes:

right there, right off the bat, that’s jean’s whole crisis - she isn’t quite happy, she doesn’t fit, and while she would love to, there is definitely something more she’s searching for

and there we go - jean’s terrified of her own power; she’s been taught that it’s something to lock away (but at the same time she’s fast outgrowing those training wheels).

i'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in // i’ll never meet the ground // crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us // we're far from the shallow now

so there we go - this is the story that’s been unfolding through days of future past and comes to its fiery peak in dark phoenix, as jean dives straight into the deep end (to a place where they can’t hurt her) -- and soars.

task one

explain the reasoning behind the song you chose to represent your character in your application.

“Superman Tonight” by Bon Jovi

There's something about you I wanna rescue I don't even know you So what does that mean

The first time, Steve’s 10, and too scrawny to even be half of use in the fight. He sees the boy as he’s walking home from school, gaze catches him across the street in the playground. They’re pelting him with mud, like it’s a game, like it could ever be a game to hurt someone. Steve’s backpack is dropped to the sidewalk before he even thinks, already running across the damp grass to the pack of boys who think that being the best means being the biggest bully. Steve knows it takes a lot more strength to be kind. He gets in one good punch before they turn on him, mud and punches flying. But that’s alright. Maybe the other boy can run for it now. And maybe someday Steve’ll be big enough to make them fear him hitting back.

Steve does get bigger, but the bullies do, too. The first positive thought he has after waking up from The Ice is that at least they’ve won the war. It doesn’t take him long to realize that there’s still a war, there’s always a war. He feels almost cynical, helpless, until he remembers that yes, there’s always a war—but there’s also always good guys who will fight—to the very death, if it comes to that. The Avengers, as cheesy as it sounds, bolster his ever-present faith in humanity… or, well, pseudo-humanity, given some of their backgrounds. But they’re all a little broken down, a little worn out, and god, do they all have baggage. Steve thought he left his demons behind in the shadows of 1945, but they haunt him on unsuspecting nights, and early pre-dawn hours when no amount of running seems fast enough. So he tries not to look back, focuses on the little family he’s cobbled together now, instead of the ones he’s lost. Because they are a family—they certainly bicker like one. And Steve talks to them in quiet moments, encourages them all one-by-one to forget their demons, to focus on the good they’re doing now, to keep putting one tired foot in front of the other. He tries to lead by example, to be not the leader they want, but the one they need. At first, he feels like he’s failing all of the time. And then something starts to shift. They start to see the potential for a better world, and there’s an undertone of affection to the bickering. Together, they start to build something new.

It’s never enough. Steve lays awake in his too big and too comfortable bed, and almost misses his army cot. At least that didn’t feel like an ocean. He has a family again, people to care about—and even more wondrously, people who care about him. But he still feels the empty ache in his gut, especially on the quiet nights when there’s no world that needs saving. He still hears the echo of a tune on a 1940s record player that he never got to dance to. Right person, right place. Why has that been so hard to find? He closes his eyes and thinks of hands he would hold, lips he’d like to kiss. He’s always been a little awkward, when it comes to romance. Doesn’t help that all his best moves are from the 40s. People don’t even say “going steady” anymore, but that’s all he wants. To go steady with someone—and is it any coincidence that the word makes him think of foundations? To steady someone, have them steady him, to ground each other in this crazy, too fast, too bright world. Some nights he doesn’t want to save the world. Some nights he just wants to be a hero to one person.

going to put my task for all four of mine under a read more! i’ll give a little detail of why i chose the song and sometimes the artist, and basically the relation to the characters. hopefully i make sense. :)

Stephen Strange

‘i might be wrong’ by radiohead

i see stephen as someone who listens to genres of music that radiohead, muse, grimes, and nine inch nails would fall under. sort of prog rock, sort of industrial. the type that to some others they would think is noise. i chose this song specifically because of the rhythm of it and thom’s voice. the song and the title sort of reflects a bit onto stephen in the sense of he’s wrapped up in everything while simultaneously pretending to know everything and actually not knowing a whole lot.

Natasha Romanoff

‘i come with knives’ by iamx

i know the very beginning of the song is german but this song is just... very natasha. down to the beat, the way his voice flows, and just generally the title ‘i come with knives’. she’s protecting herself and she quite literally comes with knives. her outer shell is sharp and deeply layered - you won’t get to see her true self, unless of course you’re name is james. still this song is raw and understated. and low key aggressive. also ‘to love you is agony’ which... for natasha is terribly and sadly true.

Thor Odinson

‘immigrant song’ by led zeppelin

i mean this song... basically embodies thor, doesn’t it? it’s all about vikings and viking lore. the conquering world, the journey to valhalla. it’s a battle song made for thor - (thank you taika for giving us this gift). but the fact that it’s a 70s rock song makes it just somehow even better? robert plant’s haunted vocals marries this into a tale that just winds through and into thor. 

Erik Lehnsherr

für elise - ludwig von beethoven

erik is... complicated. i chose this song for him because it’s a beautiful classical tale with haunting notes and just a sort of longing and sadness with each key stroke. but at the same time it switches into something chaotically uplifting back to the haunting melody. which, in a sense, is erik. he’s a man of sadness and tragedy who made himself into something of power and hope for his people. also you cannot tell me a man like erik lehnsherr doesn’t sit and listen to classical music.
