If someone lets you borrow their personal copy of their favorite book, you should feel very privileged. Because when they place it in your hands, it's like giving you an important piece of themselves. Because when you open it you can see where it may have been dogeared, or maybe there are tear smudges, maybe they've underlined the parts that mean something to them and written in the margins. It probably falls open to their favorite part because the spine has been broken. And when someone lets you see that, they're letting you see the parts of it that mattered to them, that reached them on a personal level, that maybe they don't let many people see, and that can be a very intimate experience, if you understand the gravity of what they have given you.
