so like i never know where to go with this so this is going to sound like a load of nonsensical shit i bet, but...... despite the overall development of their relationship, the foundation differs between both timelines... like in final frontier (my own story, happens after bis) howlen pledges his service to fawful as his henchman and then eventually grows close, whereas in supsaga doesn’t happen timeline they’re both classmates and each others’ peers. in final frontier howlen initially joins with the purpose of devoting himself to finishing what cackletta started forever ago, which means furthering fawful’s goal; but over time when getting to know him he gets to see who he is and realizes that things are a lot more... complicated, and he starts to place more concern in his wellbeing and putting his life and safety above his own, to the point where his own personal policy changes to be that he won’t die in vain as long as fawful ends up alive. it’s this that fawful is taken completely by surprise and fascinated by, because howlen is not brainwashed or fawfulized or afraid of him, howlen is not a construct created to do his bidding, he is an Actual Person capable of his own thoughts, who also sees fawful as an Actual Person who is hiding a lot more than he’s letting on, and he Chooses to extend his thoughts to help and protect him. it’s another reason why he was fighting internally over whether to actually go through the final step of “his” plan

but if supsaga events never happen, and they first meet as classmates in the hooniversity, it’s fawful who reaches out to howlen first, because he has a Feeling(tm) that things will go well (also because fawful spent 3 years away from school for personal reasons and he wants. a friend maybe lol). it’s still a similar impact, but under widely different circumstances; howlen gets to actually know fawful as more than just a name and a genius brain, and he treats him like an Actual Person, and eventually falls in love w him etc etc. and with them both seeing each other as who they really are and actually understanding the issues they have... i don’t know how to say it, they just click so easily and they become each other’s first genuine support system. like for both of them, this is someone they know they can absolutely let their guard down around, and know that they’ll never judge or put down who they are, they’ll always listen to and look out for one another; between howlen and fawful they know this is someone they can without a doubt trust. 

tldr because this got super super rambly: fawful and howlen love and trust and support each other so very much, regardless of the situation
