Scott didn’t get a high school degree until his late 20s so it makes sense that he doesn’t think of himself as smart. Especially when he compares himself to Tessa
more school doesn't mean you're smarter. it's not like Scott was sitting in Alma's basement smoking pot til his late 20s, he was working so hard that finishing school wasn't the top priority
i don't think you can be the best on the planet at something if you're not intelligent. and there are different types -- i'm not even sure that Tessa's exceptionally book smart or academic. what she's kind of extraordinary at is discipline and focus and the ability to see past or transcend limitations - figuring out how to thread the needle and achieving what she wants. Romain said that she could be a great coach because she's an out of the box thinker where skating was concerned. she appears to be great at manifesting, but i think it's more that she lets herself imagine things that other people don't dare to dream about and then works as hard as necessary to make it happen. that's a type of intelligence that's not that common
Scott does sell himself short. i know it's a Canadian thing to be modest, but he takes it too far when he puts himself down. sometimes he pretends to know less than he does, or maybe it's more disarming and helps socially when he plays up the good ol boy part of him. but i'm not sure why he thinks he's not as smart as Tessa. he's more comfortable on the fly and more articulate speaking in public, where she needs to prepare what she wants to say and still has a tendency to sound canned. he's detail oriented and observant about things he cares about and intense about things being done correctly. she said she'd imagine lifts, and he'd figure out mechanically how it could happen - those are 2 different kinds of intelligence. i really think he's ultimately responsible for the high taste level of the programs and quality of the skating coming out of his school. that requires big picture thinking, an editor's mind, and an artistic sensibility. and he's emotionally intelligent with his students. so i don't think it makes any sense if he thinks he's not smart
