                 Jordieshouldn’t have said it. He’s been lying on his bed for probably three hoursnow, staring up at the ceiling and wishing he hadn’t been so fucking stupid andsaid that. Sure, Tyler was being crankyafter playoffs going the way they did, and Jordie can work himself into a badmood if he sulks too long about how at least Tyler’s gotten to win the Cup before, but if Jordie justpauses and thinks, he’ll eventuallycome around to the thought that it’s okay Tyler’s upset, it’s good he’s as upset as them, because hecares as much as they do.

               The problemis that Jordie opened his goddamn mouth before he hit that realization. Tylerwas in a mood, and every mood of Tyler’s involves being clingy; Tyler wantedJordie to hold him, and Jordie told him not to be needy.

               Tyler’swith Jamie right now, Jamie’s making it better, but Jordie still fucked up andstill feels like the worst person on the planet. There are lines; telling Tylerhe’s being a whiny brat would have been one thing. Telling him he’s being needyis an entirely different goddamn thing, because they’ve been working on that, letting Tyler know it’sokay to need things from them, and Jordie undid who knows how much of that workwith one word.

               Hopefullyby now, Tyler will at least look at him; he’d bolted from the room when Jordiesaid that, but maybe now Jordie can apologize. He hauls himself up, goes toknock on Jamie’s closed door. There’s no answer, so he opens it; Jamie’sasleep, but Tyler’s nowhere to be seen.

               “Jame?”Jordie whispers, and then, louder, “Jamie?” Jamie makes grumbling littlesounds. “Jamie, where’s Tyler?”

               “Idunno,” Jamie yawns, “he was in the living room with you.”

               “Like –hours ago.”

               “I’unno,I went to sleep after that,” Jamie says, and Jordie’s starting to get a sinkingfeeling of realization. “Why?”

               “I –said some shit to him I shouldn’t have,” Jordie says.

               “Jor-”

               “Icalled him needy, but I didn’t mean it!”Jordie bursts out, just – just needs Jamie to know that, that he didn’t meanit, he doesn’t think Tyler’s needy, not in a bad way. Jamie looks at him; Jordie wants to crumple to the floorand cry, because Jamie looks disappointed and sad and frustrated, becauseJordie was taking care of their Tyler and fucked up and hurt him.

               “He’sprobably at his place,” Jamie says, gets out of bed and goes to grab socks froma drawer, finds his shoes. Jordie just stands in the doorway and watches,miserable.

               “I’msorry,” Jordie says, as Jamie brushes past him.

               “I’mbringing him back up here to the living room,” is all Jamie says; Jordie knowsthat means don’t be there when I bringhim. Jordie understands why.

               Heslinks back to his room, closes the door; a few minutes go by before he hearsthe front door open, footsteps in the entryway. Jordie doesn’t move from hisspot sitting back on the bed. Maybe if he stays motionless, everything he’s feelingwill stay just – motionless, still, like water brimming a cup, ready to spilleverywhere but holding on for now.

               “C’mon,baby,” Jamie’s saying, “we’re gonna sit in the living room, okay?”

               “It’sokay, I’m fine,” Tyler says, but it’s shaky, “I don’t – don’t need it. I’mfine.” He’s – Jordie taught him that,made him think that he shouldn’t need them,that needing is bad. Jordie’s started to cry even before he hears Tyler add, “Idon’t need it, Jamie!” heartbreaking and broken and an obvious lie.              “Baby, shh, it’s okay if you needit,” Jamie says, “c’mere. I need it.”

               “No youdon’t,” Tyler mumbles.

               “I do,baby. You’re sad and I need to holdyou, I can’t handle seeing you hurt and not doing anything.” Tyler must acceptthis, because there’s footsteps again, and their voices fade as they go furtherinto the apartment.

               Jordiewants to go apologize, but – he can’t, he can’t.He can’t stop crying and he can’t apologize because what he says doesn’tmatter, because he’s told Tyler all along that he can need them, and thenturned around and accused him of being needy. Jordie’s established himself as aliar; his apology won’t fix anything, and he doesn’t deserve to feel like he’smade up for this when he can’t.

               Heflinches back hard when the door opens unexpectedly. “Jor, aren’t you com-”Jamie starts to say, then gives this wounded little sound. Jordie barely hastime to rub his sleeve over his face before Jamie’s at his side, pressing closeand wrapping his arms around Jordie. “Don’t, please, Jordie-” Jamie babblesout, like he doesn’t know what to do, is panicking and can’t stop, “Jor, don’tcry, I’m sorry-”

               “It’snot your fault, you’re right,” Jordie mumbles, “shh, don’t freak out, okay? It’s– I’m fine, Tyler’s the one that’s-”

               “Youwere supposed to come help,” Jamie says, like he has to fix onto things heunderstands to stop falling apart at this thing he’s never encountered before,Jordie crying, “not – don’t be sad! It’s okay, Tyler forgives you, he knows youdidn’t mean it-”        

               “Howcan he know that?” Jordie says, as Jamie clings to him tighter, fingers twistedin Jordie’s shirt, “I said it’s okay to need us and then called him needy! Ididn’t mean it, but how can he ever trust that?”

               “Cos heknows you,” Jamie begs, “just – don’t cry, don’t cry, please-”

               “I’m not,” Jordie says, but he is.

               There’sfootsteps, and then Tyler’s coming into the room; his eyes are red-rimmed andhe’s quiet, climbs onto the bed from the other side. Jordie doesn’t have anywords left, too gutted to see how sad Tyler’s eyes are; Jamie lets Tyler detachhim from Jordie, and – okay, Tyler wants Jamie back, he needs someone that won’thurt him, Jordie isn’t steeling himself against sobbing- but then Tyler’stugging Jordie back onto the bed, nudging him onto his back and crawling overto curl up against his side. Jordie gives a jagged little sob of relief, wrapshis arms tight around Tyler. Jamie scoots in against Jordie’s other side, eyesbig.

               “Tellme,” Tyler starts, takes a shuddering breath and buries his face in Jordie’schest, “tell me you didn’t mean it. I need to hear you say that.”

               “I didn’tmean it,” Jordie promises, wants to tear the words from where they’re carved inhis chest and give them to Tyler, because they’re real, part of him, he means it. “It’s okay that you need us, Ipromise.”

               “Okay,”Tyler says, breathes in slow, “okay.” He – believes Jordie. Jordie knows it,can feel it, because Tyler clings butdoesn’t tense up anymore, Tyler is letting himself need Jordie. Jordie’s beentelling him it’s okay for a long time now, and – and Tyler believes it, hereally does, so deeply that even when Jordie fucks up, Tyler will still trusthis promise.

thank you! It was last night ahahaha. It was a Christmas present, I called my mom at work and sent her the link and basically said 'buy that. right now. before they're sold out. do it. i dont care that you're working. DO IT.'  and so she did. She wanted to get me a Bruins one, too, but at that point they only had sizes too large for me. At least I got one! 

I wore it to work right after the Christmas break and my boss looked at me and said 'so is there like a sports thing today?' and I was like 'WELLLL, THE BLACKHAWKS ARE PLAYING BUT NO I JUST WANTED TO WEAR THIS.'

“Uh, who?” Jordie’s mostly asleep when he answers the phone,probably because it’s an indecent hour of the night and who even calls at this hour?

Well – ten thirty. It’s ten thirty. He’s just tired, and atiny bit mopey because Tyler’s at the allstar game and not, say, in Jordie’sarms where he won’t be making sad ‘this reminds me of Boston’ faces. He wasmaking those faces before leaving for the all-star game, and it kills Jordie when Tyler’s the kind ofsad that hugs can’t fix. It’s even worse when he has to let Tyler go after he’sbeen miserable, and still isn’t happier yet.

“Bergeron,” the guy says.

“So…”

“I’m a teammate of Tyler’s,” Bergeron says, and Jordie’sabout to protest, when he adds, “I mean, I was. In Boston. And for the weekend,but that’s beside the point. He’s just – well, I’m sure you saw the ‘trade.’”

“Yeah,” Jordie says slowly. He texted Tyler. And called him.He just – wanted to make sure Tyler was okay. It was all clearly a joke, butJordie knows Tyler. Tyler didn’t pickup, didn’t reply, and Jordie’s been trying to convince himself it’s justbecause Tyler’s busy partying and doing things that aren’t sad andheartbreaking, like being upset about reminders of being traded.

“He’s having a bit of a hard time with it, and I thinktalking to you would help.”

“He said that?” Jordie – wonders if he’s good enough atthis, sometimes, is all. He wants to be thebest at comforting Tyler, and this feeling of wanting to be the single best– it’s new to him, terrifying in its vastness, its seeming impossibility.

Bergeron’s already off the phone, though, some shufflingsounds in the background. “Jordie?” he hears next, Tyler’s voice, all quiet.

“Hey, Ty,” Jordie says, sits up more.

“I got traded,” Tyler says, kind of warbling, “not – for real,but – but it – once, it was for real, so I just – it’s stupid, I know, but-”

“You’re still inDallas with me, baby,” Jordie cuts in when he hears Tyler’s breath hitch, “Iknow it feels like last time, but it wasn’t real. You’re gonna come home to me.”

“I know,” Tyler whispers, maybe true, maybe not entirely.

“Last time sucked,” Jordie says, “I know that. It’s okay tostill feel bad about it when it comes up, it’s hard to get over thingsentirely, and you don’t have to,baby, it’s okay to still be upset by it. It doesn’t mean you’ve lost any of theprogress you made since then just cos it can still touch you. You haven’t comeany less far.”

Tyler gives a hiccupy little breath. “You fix everything,”he says, all soft and warm, and this is the only thing Jordie needs to be thebest at, because Tyler’s okay again, and Jordie knows he’s safe because Jordie’sable to make him feel that way.
