Design: Atang Tshikare

“Born in Bloemfontein and influenced by his father’s visual storytelling, Atang Tshikare is a formidable Creative bringing to life functional art resembling living organisms and animals.”

Atang Tshikare, born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, has a bragging rights list concrete enough to rival any young contemporary creative and he has a complementary humble demeanour to match. Influenced from early childhood by his father’s graphic style and visual storytelling, the self-taught artist has grown into a multidisciplinary creative.

Tshikare’s work at present consists of functional art and sculptural furniture. They often take the form of living organisms or animals, decorated in distinct graphic patterns and elements highlighting his narrative, stemming from his wild and vast imagination with nuances of Tswana and other Southern African cultural references.

When Cape Town-based design foundation Southern Guild opened its new exhibition Heavy Metal, a rock concert was the obvious way to kick things off. The showcase, featuring amazing art works forged out of metal, runs until March 9 at Cape Town’s Woodstock Foundry – and is aptly presented in collaboration with steel producers ArcelorMittal. “We are keen to develop the use of steel in the arts and to showcase it beyond its traditional use,” explains Nku Nyembezi-Heita, CEO of ArcelorMittal.

Thirty six artists, designers and ceramicists are involved in the exhibition, including Atang Tshikare, Mokena Makeka and Willowlamp – a local lighting company whose designs use a patented method of attaching ball chain to laser-cut steel frames. “The ingredient that makes this work interesting is the narrative, which is intertwined within the design of each piece, and the unique way that it is accomplished,” says Trevyn McGowan, co-director of Southern Guild. Special activities lined up for the opening week include public studio workshops and live ‘pourings’ of molten metal. It’s the engineering equivalent of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.
